Keith Ballard Flips Over Jamie McGinn: Canucks Defenseman's Huge Hit (VIDEO)

Posted: 05/23/11 08:00 AM ET

Vancouver's Keith Ballard made arguably the best hit of the NHL playoffs during Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday. Early in the second period, Sharks winger Jamie McGinn charged at Ballard in Vancouver's zone. But the Canucks defenseman quickly ducked and hip checked McGinn, taking out his legs.

McGinn flipped over Ballard and came close to falling on his head. Fortunately, McGinn immediately got back up as the game continued. Scroll down to watch the hit.

Ballard should patent that move. He's the only one that can do it, it seems. Although others are trying now I see.

Happy to see it was McGinn that went flying. I'd say the best hit of the series was Murray and Kesler meeting mid-ice. Unfortunately, it was Kesler that went flying that time.

Glad Ballard finally got back in the lineup.

This is one of two reasons why I love having Ballard on my team. The other is his ability to carry the puck into the opponents' zone and create chances (or goals).

McGinn left his feet just prior to the hit and should have been called for a penalty. Go Canucks and get these clowns out of the playoffs.

Sharks are more interested in fighting than playing the game. The fact that they are being throttled on the scoreboard is poetic justice.

If the NHL would play their game like it's played in the Olympics, NO GOONS, they might actually draw an audience.

He was just trying to duck the hit McGinn was trying to make. It worked out well.

He's famous for his hip checks, actually.

I know, but look at his face right before the "check." Looks like he's trying to duck McGinn to me, although it turned out to be an fun play.

Does Vancouver win that game if the refs don`t give them 3, two man advantages within the same powerplay opportunity?

Did the Sharks lose the game even though they had five straight power plays? Goddamn right they did. I wish the refs would stay out of the game, but Vancouver is by far the superior team.

I`m not looking at it through the rose colored glasses of being a fan of either team. There`s no play in hockey more likely to produce a goal than a two man advantage powerplay. And the refs know it.

What I saw was a Vancouver team outplayed by San Jose by a significant margin. The Sharks out shot the Canucks 35 to 13.

Except for the 1 minute 15 second, 3 consecutive two man advantage gift from the refs, Vancouver was outscored by San Jose for the rest of the 58 minutes and 45 seconds of the game.

I`m not trying to say one team is better than the other. I`m simply saying the series would be even at two wins each if not for the interference by the refs in game four.

Both teams were getting some pretty ridiculous penalties.

The ref's didn't "give" the 5 on 3's, the Sharks made it practically inevitable all by themselves.

Heatley's high sticking penalty was his stick whacking Hodgson over the head. There was no way around calling that.

Mitchell's hook on Sedin... ok, I generally wish they'd let those goes but it was only the second in the sequence and Mitchell said flat out after the game that yeah, he hooked him. If it happened at the end of a string of three other penalties I think the ref's would have looked the other way but at this point penalties were 5-1 in favor of the sharks.

Then too many men. Again, normally one I would be ok with the ref's letting go... *EXCEPT* when the player jumping on early **immediately plays the puck**. That's a no-no. And that's what happened. Have to call that. That's all on the Sharks.

Then the last one... guy shoots it over the glass from his own end. What were the ref's supposed to do, pretend the puck was still on the ice and tell everyone to please keep playing? Play make believe like they **don't know** that's delay of game? That one was automatic and again, nobody involved in making it happen except the Sharks themselves.

And want to keep in mind the 5 consecutive power plays they handed the Sharks before that? Three of which were REALLY questionable calls?

The Sharks cost themselves this game.

The penalties that put the Sharks in 5-on-3 situations were of the "have no choice but to call" variety. Mitchell hooked Sedin right in front of the official, Sedin's hard pass to Clowe (?) before the sixth player left the ice was a classic too-many-men penalty that will always get called and Murphy flipped the puck over the glass which everybody, including himself, knew was automatic. Ouch. Look at the bright side. You witnessed hockey history.

Everything about that hit made me happy
