California Education Service Workers Will Take 'Midnight Ride' To Sacramento

California Teacher Protest

Posted: 06/ 6/11 09:10 AM ET

Barbara Torres says she was a "troubled child" growing up in the Los Angeles public school system.

But, at age 14, an administrator gave her a chance, setting her up with work as a student aide. Torres has remained an employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District for the past 16 years. She works as a special education assistant, helping children with autism adapt to mainstream classrooms.

With the financial stresses on education, though, she worries that the next troubled child to come through LAUSD's public schools may not be quite so lucky.

"Kids have issues but we can work through them, they can graduate. You just have to have that push," Torres told The Huffington Post. "We're overworked, morale is low, there are furloughs and there are pay cuts. We all have to do extra. It's hard on us but it's even harder on the kids. What if those kids don't have that somebody like I did?"

Torres says that's why she plans to join about 100 other education service workers, from cafeteria servers to bus drivers to custodians, of SEIU Local 99 at midnight. They'll hop on a bus in Los Angeles, planning to reach Sacramento by 7:30 Tuesday morning. There, they'll give legislators a piece of their minds about Governor Jerry Brown's budget.

They'll meet with their state representatives, urging them to greenlight Brown's proposal to extend temporary tax increases and to repay schools owed money under Proposition 98, a 1988 law that requires that a certain percentage of California's budget be spent on education. According to SEIU Local 99, Brown's May budget proposal would spend almost half of the $6.6 billion in increased state revenue on education. If legislators instead chose to cut taxes, the union says, they would cause about $5 billion in education funding cuts.

Though the midnight ride is but one instance of rallying for education spending around the country. Over the weekend, protestors in Wisconsin kicked off a slew of actions by erecting a tent city called Walkerville in honor of the governor, his budget and his plan to scrap collective bargaining for public workers. The rallies kicked off Sunday and featured speeches from education professionals.

Story continues below

On Saturday, hundreds marched on Milwaukee to protest education cuts. Also on Saturday, North Carolina Democrats staged a funeral march to protest what they called the "death of public education."

The midnight ride comes after the California Teachers Association organized a State of Emergency Week of protests in Sacramento in May.

SEIU Local 99, a union for school service workers, is clear that its constituency is different.

"Our students need better schools and funding," said Blanca Gallegos, a spokesperson for the union. "We're on the same message as the teachers, but we're trying to highlight the role that the classified employees play as part of the education team. You need to fund the entire team."

Larry Sand, who runs the California Teachers Empowerment Network, says he is skeptical of actions like the midnight ride.

"They [the CTA] had the whole State of Emergency week," he said. "If that didn't do it, I don't know what a bunch of SEIU people taking a midnight ride to Sacramento is going to do." There are Republican holdouts to SEIU's policy agenda, Sand said, that are unlikely to be flipped by the visit.

Still, Gallegos believes the trip can make a difference. "It gets legislators to listen one-on-one," she said. "These are not just numbers, but they're real people, real faces, real families."

The school system is already stressed, she said. "Some of the largest cuts were to the custodial staff. We've seen bathrooms that are not cleaned as often," she said.

Gamaliel Andrade, a Los Angeles cafeteria worker, has noticed as well.

"This trip is important to me because some people are trying to blame the education deficit on cafeteria workers' health insurance," he said. "They're trying to put blame on a working-class guy like me, but I'm just trying to make a difference in people's lives."

He said he opposes next school year's proposed furlough days, but is still giving up his wages on Tuesday to protest. "My goal is awareness," he said. "We want people to know it all matters."

When I was a lad, I served a term
as intern in an organizing firm
I held long meetings, and I polled the poor
and i polished up the handle on the Big Brass Door
Chorus
he polished up the handled so carefully, that no one ever asked to see his SATs
I polished up the handle so carefully, that now i am the leader of the whole country
You know, it's not easy being me

Like Blackwater and haliburton did, saving billions by doing what low paid career military used tp do???? Or like the public tool roads that were sold off and now cost more and generate profits for a few private "investors"????

I think we can all agree spending more money on education will result in spending more money on education.Anyone want to disagree with that?

Education is an investment in the future - -in other nations, not in America. Because in America, if a CEO needs an educated person, he will hire someone on an H1B visa--from a country where education is valued.
01:54 PM on 6/06/2011
Obviously education is an investment in the future. In this country, we get a lousy return. We spend almost 2 1/2 times more per student (inflation adjusted) than we did 30-40 years ago and have much worse results. Probably lots of reasons for that, but it is really silly to argue that we don't spend a lot. We do and don't get much.

You know what we should do? We should push California's failed, bankrupt Progressive policies to a national scale! Oh wait...........

Uh huh...yeah...it had nothing to do with a huge number of overpaid state workers and their lavish pensions, job-killing eco-fascism and illegal aliens. Riiiiigghht.

Let the unions walk all the way to Sacramento if they want. I say let them bankrupt the state like they're doing and let all of their benefits and pay get cancelled. When is enough for these people? They want taxes raised so they can get raises and enormous benefit packages..too bad. If you don't like it then quit and there will be 10 people applying for your job with your lousy pay and benefits.

We don't want no union jobs! We want low wage jobs! We don't want no health care! We don't want no pension! Low wage jobs! Low wage jobs! Low wage jobs for all Americans! No benefits! Yeah!

That is exactly what Americans are going to get: low wage jobs with no benefits -- just what the American people are screaming for!

Tax breaks for the richest among us! Yeah!

Having formerly worked in education myself, there is nothing but resistance to new ideas, methods, and thinking. These rallies are nothing more than a defense of the status quo - a system that is falling short. Sadly, we will continue to fall behind other countries in the developed (and developing) world. If education is going to be funded, it needs to be reformed and brought into the 21st century.

Because there is a vestige of a great university sytem ,and not much competition from American students.Check out an advanced physics course.Youn see very few American whites and no American blacksThank goodness some of the smart foreigners want to stay

we fled california 3 years ago because of the illegal alien problem. the school and healthcare system is broke mainly due to catering to illegal aliens. if california was like arizona...pertaining to illegal aliens...california would save so much money for its 'legal' population.
11:38 AM on 6/06/2011
As a Californian, totally agree.
12:41 PM on 6/06/2011
Jeez. You're admitting to White Flight? I'm also from California and ended up in Kentucky (thanks to the US Army), but I don't see where we have to blame the education issues there on 'catering to illegal aliens'. The first gigantic cuts in education began under Gov. ("If you've seen one redwood, you've seen them all") Reagan, who you may remember also closed all of the state mental hospitals, dumping large numbers of mentally ill onto the streets, and beginning the first big wave of 'homeless' people. Education in California has been under almost ceaseless attack since then, including the deplorable state lottery, which adds not ONE PENNY to the school budget. They merely reduce the amount going to the schools from the general fund by the amount supplied by lottery income. I'm amazed that anyone still becomes a teacher in that environment: they are required to obtain a master's degree and pay for continuing education but they are poorly paid and ceaselessly blamed for poor student performance on standardized tests. Yes, there's a language issue, but there are a huge number of state citizens that speak no English. Where would you deport THEM? The real issue is poverty, not ethnicity. Spend some money on keeping kids in school, which is a huge predictor of future success. Don't give up on kids because you don't like the language their parents speak.
23 hours ago (6:43 PM)
they would be deported to their home country. then told the process for entering america legally. teachers have awesome hours, great benefits and summers off. my husband is a lawyer and has a goal of one day being a high school teacher. its a great gig. i dont know why teachers are complaining so much. our private industry jobs increase our health insurance copays every year. where have the raises been in private sector jobs? i have no issue with people that speak another language. its interesting you know so much about california yet live in very white kentucky. you have no idea how far downhill california has gone. illegals piling into the public school system thus decreasing the quality of american children. its time for america to protect its border. props to arizona! the only reason why obama is so into illegals is because he needs their illegal vote.

Of course ... Cause they work cheap, don't complain, ask for no benifits, and if paid right, avoids any employer paid SS or state taxes... Plus the added benifit of keeping wages low because every legal employee knows an undocumented worker will jump right in.... And we all know the "state" enforcement policyfavors those that skirt the law with no inspections or repercussions for hiring undocumented ... No risk win!!!!!

Get over it people, after eight years of stripping the state of all finances, the Governator should be sued in court for malfeasance. Therfe is no money and the cuts will happen. I can't feel too sorry for the people of California, you wanted Davis out and Arnold in, so you just have to deal with it and wish you had never voted for him. Read sometime about HOW Arnold was put into office.

Minimum wage for all Americans! Let's here it for more unemployment! Yeah!
01:38 PM on 6/06/2011
*hear* ....... facepalm
02:52 PM on 6/06/2011
Did you happen to take at least one econ course in college? Minimum wage laws increase unemployment. I can explain quickly. Company X has $1,000,000 set aside for labor. They can hire 50 employees at $20,000 each but the gov't comes in and says you must pay at least $30,000 each. So company says ok, we still have $1,000,000 set aside for labor so we will only hire 33 now. You can hope and change all you want but that is how it works. Just cause you demand companies pay more does not mean they increase the pool for labor. They just hire less. Goes back to the old saying you can have 20% of something or 30% of nothing.

Why don't they do what is done eevery day in the "real" world; if the budget needs to be cut by 20% then give an acoss the board 20% cut and keep everybody, not cut 20% of your work force.

At my school - There were no bus drivers, there were no cafeteria workers, there was no school lunch. We had to get to school on our own and we had to make our own lunch.
