This American Life is amazing stories from real life – that happen to be true.

"We're always looking for a new way to do a great, fun event," says This American Life host Ira Glass. "And it's exciting to think we could do that event in hundreds of cities simultaneously. With popcorn. Usually our fans don't get to enjoy our show with popcorn."

Presented exclusively in select theatres by National CineMedia's (NCM) Fathom, in partnership with BY Experience and Chicago Public Radio, and in association with Public Radio International, This American Life – Live! features a rare opportunity for fans to interact with Glass via a question and answer session. Fans may email a question in advance to ask@thisamericanlife.org and select questions will be answered live by Glass during the event.

Audiences will get the first look at select excerpts from the upcoming second season of This American Life on Showtime, premiering on the network on Sunday, May 4th at 10:00 p.m. PDT/EDT. "The stories in season two are funnier, more moving, and more confident," Glass said.

The idea for the cinema event is so new, that Glass wanted to gauge fans' interest through a survey. "We thought maybe a couple hundred people would fill it out," says Glass. "We looked at the survey results, and more than 20,000 people had told us they wanted to see the show in theatres. After that, we had to do the event."

This American Life – Live! appears on the big screen in high-definition with 5.1 Sound in more than 300 participating AMC Entertainment Inc., Cinemark USA Inc., Georgia Theatre Company, Goodrich Quality Theaters, Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres, National Amusements and Regal Entertainment Group movie theatres and select performing arts center locations in the United States, including the Penn Cinema (Lititz, PA), Rose Theatre (Port Townsend, WA), State Theatre (Traverse City, MI) and the Strand Theatre (Rockland, ME) through NCM’s exclusive Digital Broadcast Network.

"As fans of This American Life, NCM Fathom is excited to bring the host of this acclaimed series to audiences during this unique and exciting event live in their local movie theatre," says Dan Diamond, vice president of National CineMedia's Fathom. "NCM Fathom continues to bring events of all types – from public radio favorites like This American Life to anime, music concerts, children's programming, the Metropolitan Opera and more to fans across the country. This will be a fun night in theatres for everyone and we're honored to bring Ira Glass to the big screen through NCM Fathom."

This American Life debuted in 1995 as a weekly, hour-long radio program, produced by Chicago Public Radio and distributed by Public Radio International (PRI). Now heard by more than 1.7 million listeners weekly on more than 500 PRI affiliate stations nationwide, the program is one of the most popular podcasts in America. Primarily journalistic non-fiction, the show also features fiction, essays and field recordings. The show has won many major broadcasting awards including the Peabody, duPont-Columbia and Edward R. Murrow Awards. In 2001, Time Magazine named Glass the "Best Radio Host in America."

"Through public radio, This American Life has created a vibrant and active community of listeners," says Alisa Miller, PRI president and chief executive officer. "PRI has always been impressed at how enthusiastically listeners respond when Ira visits stations and performs in communities across the country. We are so pleased to partner with This American Life to serve listeners and our stations in a new way by using National CineMedia's in-theatre digital network to engage, inspire and entertain."

In 2007, the television version of This American Life premiered on premium cable on the Showtime Network. Newsweek called it "a jewel of a TV series." The New York Times called it “beautifully done, an opulent and moving documentary of the highest order.” The Hollywood Reporter said it "makes the ordinary extraordinary." Season one of This American Life received three Emmy nominations and an International Documentary Association Award.
