AET has a simple aim, it is to help children and young people in Africa to get a good education. AET has been working to improve education in Africa for over fifty years. In 1957, Michael Scott, one of the founders when speaking at the United Nations noted that Education is the Key to Development. That was true then and it is still true today.
It is through education that we can best help to alleviate poverty in Africa. Each year of education increases a persons life long earnings. The children of educated women are more likely to be healthy and more likely to become educated themselves. The Africa Educational Trust works in some of the poorest countries in Africa, places which have been affected not only by poverty, famine and drought but which have also been affected by conflict and war, places like Somalia, South Sudan and Northern Uganda.
A new project for the newest country in the world
This August, AET launched a new programme in South Sudan called Strengthening Village Education (SVE).
Working with 100 primary schools in marginalized communities, SVE aims to improve access to and the quality of primary education in collaboration with parent teacher associations (PTA's) and the government Ministry of Education.
The project will play particular focus on girls' education, helping girls access education and remain in school. Once the project is fully underway, one activity planned is for school girls to make short documentary films exploring issues affecting them.
