Russia Upset Over U.S. Warship In Black Sea

Uss Monterey

06/12/11 06:58 AM ET   AP

MOSCOW -- Russia is voicing concern about a U.S. warship now just off its shores in the Black Sea.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey, which is taking part in annual joint military exercises conducted by NATO and Ukraine, is an integral part of U.S. plans to create a missile shield in Europe, which Russia opposes.

Russia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement Sunday saying Russia "has repeatedly stressed that we will not leave unnoticed any elements of U.S. strategic infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of our borders and will consider any such steps as a threat to our security."

Russia agreed to consider NATO's proposal last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but insisted the system be run jointly. NATO rejected that demand and no compromise has been found yet.

So how much does it cost us to send our Navy on these "trips"? Can we get to the point where we do not have a presence in every corner of the world or are we interested in the old saying "the sun never sets on the US" Bring everyone home and let's get our act together for the benefit of the people that are paying for all this.

Here's what's happening and once again this Administration is getting it wrong: Russia is holding back on joining the U.S. and other countries in intervening in Syria with sanctions or militarily. Russia has a naval base in Syria and it's not in Russia's interest to put pressure on Assad or to encourage the uprising in Syria as the U.S. and Israel have been doing, because a pro-Western government in Syria might lead to the shutdown of their base. But I believe that’s not their primary motivation.

This antagonistic maneuver to stick it to Russia represents another foreign policy blunder by this Administration. You don’t gain respect by bullying. Also, Syria is not Libya, there are less people in Syria wanting change than in Libya and then Libya is not Egypt either. In Egypt the resounding majority wanted change. In Libya it’s less clear and it could become a civil war, BUT with Syria, this Administration is really bungling things. Major cities in Syria have seen next to no protests. While I do not condone aggression against protestors; let’s not forget that many of these protesters have kllled hundreds of security officers? In any country a government would stop this kind of protesting.

Why is this Administration INTERFERING in Syria, because anyone who thinks there has been no U.S. interference there is pretty naïve? Anyway, can we please stop meddling in foreign governments? ...continued

Russia is drawing a line in the sand with this and I believe the Russians are right. STAY OUT OF SYRIA.

I’m sick and tired of this growing imperialistic foreign policy and it has to stop! The U.S. is sticking it to the Russians because they refuse to be a party to U.S. imperialistic ambitions…Good on them!

What if a Russian war ship was to sail into the Great Lakes (on the Canadian side). Would American's not be concerned?

Well in the war of 1812 an invasion fleet was on lake Champlain so it did kind of happen.

Idiot! The Black Sea is an international body of water, just like the Gulf of Mexico that the Ruskies regularly sail on their way to Cuba. Turkey and the Ukraine have the most water front property on the Black Sea along with Bulgaria, Moldava, Romania, Rep. of Georgia (not the one in the U,S) and Russia. Go back to 5th grade geography and re-take the class.
3 hours ago (10:48 PM)
Russia doesn't care if it is a international body of water or who has water front property because that is their neighborhood, close to their borders, and they have the strongest military in that neighborhood. They could easily stomp every country you mentioned like a bug. They see US warships near their country so they worry and watch them, just like when they sent warships in our neighborhood to Venezuela and we worried and watched them. They weren't threatening us they were simply hinting to us dont cause trouble over here and dont get to close to us because this is our backyard. What is wrong with that? Would you want Russian warships getting to close to us? I dont so I respect their view of not wanting ours to close to them either. Both the US and Russia can erase each other from earth with nukes, we both have the ability to deliver them. We should respect them by simply realizing it is their backyard and they are not some little weak third world country like Iraq. Ofcourse we should expect the same respect in return but we wont get it as long as we (Nato) are involved in almost all the countries that border Russia. They are getting sick and tired of us poking around, trying to run the world. We had people in Georgia when they steamrolled them in 2008. Provoking Russia does us no good, we will start WW3 if we keep it up.

So then you'll agree with me that Israel shouldn't b..tch about Iranian subs cruising around in the Red Sea.

By the way, sure it's International waters but both these maneuvers send a message, in the case of the U.S. - get on the same page as us, or else, in the case of Iran: don't mess with us, or else. And Russia responded to the U.S. maneuver and Israel responded to Iran.

These mind games are played all the time.

Earth to Russia - You do not own the Black Sea. Maybe Putin and Wiener can have a contest concerning who has the best chest in the world.

US ships have been in the Black Sea before, so what is the news.

This is different...Russians don't usually go out of their way to respond on Sundays.
8 hours ago (6:12 PM)
Mute point. The Turkish government is responsible for enforcing the Monteux Convention which limits the size of naval vessels entering the Black Sea. The Turks did not block the Bosporus, thus the ship is legally there.

Did two Black Sea ops back in 1985 and each time the Russians (then USSR) wasn't too happy we were there. They even had Bulgarian gunboats ram us in attempts to divert our course. Even made threats against us over bridge to bridge radio. Didn't work well against a USS Kidd (DDG-993) class guided missile destroyer.

I agree with others...this is all sabre rattling.
9 hours ago (4:42 PM)
This is just a little saber rattling, they dont want any trouble and they aren't going to do anything unless we do something to them and we wont. They do this every now and then just to remind us they aren't one of the weak little countries we are always invading, like a little hey were not Iraq stay out of trouble over here and dont come to close. I dont blame them I dont want Russian warships near our country either. In Russia many say our military power is overrated. In the USA many say Russia has been garbage since the Soviet Union ended, they are no longer a military super power. The fact is that those people in both countries are wrong. War between Russia and America = the end of Russia and America. Our military is indeed the strongest, best funded, most technologically advanced military in the world but Russia can still stand up to anyone. Notice how easily they steamrolled Georgia back in 2008, they aren't weak. They have enough nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles to deliver them to wipe any nation off the map so we aren't going to mess with them unless we have a death wish! Alot of people here seem to think they are weak. If you think we could take Russia I have one thing to ask. How will you deal with hundreds if not thousands of these on their way to the US: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUM3cyUPlJ8

nononse4U this is a humanitarian aid mission, Obama is there because he is really concerned about human rights violations and he is there to support democracy ---you know all the same reasons we were in Viet Nam, South Ameircan countries assassinating lawfully elected leaders, same reason we're in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Syria and probably every other Arab country........we do this because we good, decent people and the rest of the world deserves our "help"........why? what were you thinking?
