UPDATE: Carlos Zambrano apologized to Cubs closer Carlos Marmol for his rant following Sunday's loss.

EARLIER:

Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano lashed out at his teammates after St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols hit his second consecutive walk-off home run to beat Chicago on Sunday.

Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reported that Zambrano blamed relief pitcher Carlos Marmol for allowing the game-tying double from Ryan Theriot in the ninth inning.

"The problem wasn't Pujols. The problem was [Theriot's] at-bat," he said. "We should have known better than this. We are playing like a Triple-A team. This is embarrassing. Embarrassing for the team and the owners. Embarrassing for the fans. Embarrassing, that's the word for this team."

According to the report, Zambrano was yelling about Theriot's at-bat after "turning in the direction of Marmol's then-vacated locker."

"We should play better here," the 30-year-old said. "We stink. That's all I've got to say."

Marmol told reporters that he didn't know Zambrano had blamed him.

Come on now. Does anyone really expect anything from the Chicago Cubs anymore except if you happen to go to a game over priced tickets and lousy over priced food. I might add if you have ever eaten anything that is sold at Wrigley Field calling it food is more of a matter of art than substance. The Chicago Cubs have been disappointing their fans for so long that even if the team signed a pact with the Devil he couldn't help them.

Z has it right.Maybe his calling out his team will give them the kick in the pants they need.It starts with the ownership and the front office on down,Ricketts doesn't care about winning,he cares about profit.Where is Ryno when you need him?Oh yeah, you chased him away. The is a decision you will regret. If it wasn't for Z,Dempster, and Wood the Cubs would be farther down the hole than they are now.At 55,I am begining to think that I will never see a World Series at Wrigley, and I have been a Cub fan since I could say "hey, hey" about 54 years ago.

Having been to Wrigley dozens of times in the mid 70s when there were about 1637 fans in the seats from July on I can tell you I am looking forward to having some space around me in the bleachers this year. The stats say they averaged 12,000 but most of that happened early in the year before EVERYONE knew they stunk and the rest is because it is based on sales and most weren't showing up even though they had season tickets. Let's play two!

Zambrano seems to be troubled by poo-holes.

The Cubs suck because year after year owners don't put any money into putting together a decent team because they don't have to. Wrigley is not about good baseball, its about a good party. No owner has even shown an interest in having a winning team. And then the Ricketts family wants the taxpayers to put up the money for Wrigley on top of their lame excuses for a crappy team.

The problem isn't money, but money management. The Cubs spent way too much on Soriano for bad production, and Hendry seems to have no idea how to put together a team. He has way too many misses. Also, there's the fact that they don't seem to have any prospects that are top tier, and the good one like Starlin Castro, can't play defense to save his life. Finally, the players themselves are either under producing or just plain stink. I would say back up the truck, but what's the point? There's a reason why they aren't drawing like they used to.

might want to get your facts straight. cubs have one of the highest payrolls in MLB, unfortunately a lot of it is long term back loaded contracts that hendry did, and you're stuck with a bunch of over the hill has beens. i do agree ricketts is more concerned about developing the land called the 'triangle' and surrounding neighborhood, than putting a great team on the field. They may have one of the highest payrolls but it is going to waste.

In daze of old, "Zambrano Lashes Out" would be kept by typesetters in a place close at hand, so they might save a few moments time the next time he inevitably did so.

Since Zambrano broke ranks with the "Nothing's wrong, just injuries" crowd, he'll be handed a one way ticket out of the city soon. So disappointing.

you mean, 'nothing wrong, just injuries, now lets talk about developing the 'triangle' and the surrounding neighborhood, for the complete cubs experience',,,,,,,,,don't you ? cubs fans thought ricketts was their savior and would lead the cubs to the promiseland (world series). second highest ticket prices in MLB, for a soon to be last place team. NO THANKS

Ah, yes. Tom Ricketts of the "we have reasonably priced tickets in the upper deck" fame. He needs to be told that those upper deck seats are only reasonably priced for about 15 games out of the whole season.
