VATICAN CITY (RNS) Pope Benedict XVI will speak via satellite with astronauts on the International Space Station on Saturday (May 21), the first time a pope has conversed with astronauts in space.

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office, told reporters on Tuesday (May 17) that Benedict will be connected with the space station at 1:56 p.m. Rome time on Saturday.

The audiovisual transmission was planned to honor the last flight of space shuttle Endeavor, which launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Monday (May 16), and is scheduled to dock at the space station on Wednesday.

Benedict will address 12 astronauts on the space station, including Russians, Americans and two Italians. One of the Italians, Col. Roberto Vittori, a member of the Endeavor crew, will be carrying a silver medal given to him by the pope.

Papal encouragement of space exploration goes back more than four decades. Among the goodwill messages left on the moon by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969 was one from Pope Paul VI: "I look up at your heavens, made by your fingers, at the moon and stars you set in place," he wrote, quoting from the Psalms.

Why was this ever planned?

If I were the astronauts, I'd refuse the answer the call.

Astronauts in space represent scientific exploration and truth, the exact opposite to archaic fairytales represented by that little guy in the white frock..

I'm sure the Pope is happy that the international space station orbits Earth: Just like the Sun, planets, and stars.

Kind of a spacey old man himself, especially in those jeweled party hats.

Dosen't the pope realize there are no kids up there. Hope there not all catholic up there, there could be tension, and the women should lock herself in a part of the station where she is safe. She well be safe from anyone who might be in the priesthood.

This pope hopes to use space as an extension of his autocratic rule. Because there's nobody in space ready to send bishops and popes to prison for molesting children." What a blessed relief", Benny 16 says.

Hopefully, the astronauts will have questions about Nazism and pedophilia to ask the man in the dress.

This is ridiculous, and gives more fuel to the justification of mixing science with religion. It also gives the CC undue relevancy. I am amazed that NASA lets this happen.

I'm an amputee, a vet and a Catholic And I find your comment incredibly offensive on so many levels!

At the risk of sounding disrespectful, and by the way, I am also a 9 year veteran, although thankfully I can't lay claim to your other two credentials...actually it's a completely valid question. I am very sorry if you are are offended by it. I'm also very sorry that you are an amputee. And a Catholic (or any form of religionist that would be offended by a valid, scientific inquiry).

I will be sure to ask all my Believer friends to pray for your speedy physical recovery. Their prayers seem to be effective for everything from colds to individual cancer remissions, or anything else that aligns with world-wide statistical averages.

I will of course ask my praying friends about their success rate with the limb regrowth prayers. Please also keep us posted on that.

All our astronauts are busy dealing with other superstitious leaders at the moment. Please leave your name and number, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Your call is important to us. Beep.
