Canceled Mass Outrages Boston Gay Community

Boston Catholic Gays

First Posted: 06/12/11 12:07 PM ET Updated: 06/12/11 12:08 PM ET

The Boston Globe:

The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, in response to criticism it was sanctioning a celebration of Gay Pride month, announced yesterday that it had ordered a South End church to cancel a Mass scheduled for next weekend that was themed, “All are Welcome.’’

The decision outraged members of the lesbian and gay community.

“I think that’s horrible, just horrible, that they would cancel,’’ said Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, an organization that advocates for participation of gays in the Catholic Church. “What an abuse of authority. I wish I could be surprised, but I’m definitely appalled.’’

The Catholic Archbishop should've known better than to burn bridges. Wasn't ecumenism supposed to be a focus of the Pope (Benedict XVI)? Burning bridges like the Church did with "Ordinatio Sacerdotalis" (the papal bull in which it formally refused to ordain women as priests) isn't that smart an idea.

Imagine a young person, raised in the Catholic church, figuring out whether to come out, confronted with this bigotry. I hope that there is someone there to tell this young person that he or she is beautiful and welcome in the better world out there.

Homosexuals do not affect my marriage, but they can affect my spirituality if I don't show them the love and respect they deserve as a child of God. The church needs to show love, compassion and deep thinking. http://thinkunity.com

I'm hoping that very soon in the near future NOBODY will give a rat's behind what the RCC thinks about anything regarding 21st century thought.

This article confuses me. The Catholic church is very clear about their stand on gays and lesbians, yet gay and lesbians continue to go to church there.

Since the church is not a democratic institution, but a holdover from the dark ages, no amount of lobbying will create change. So "change from within" most likely won't happen.

There are many churches and groups that openly accept the community.....why not vote with your feet and money?

You don't have to be treated like trash to go to church....why not move on?

That sign sums up my feelings... If you really are Christian, "start acting like Christians"! I think Jesus would be appalled at their behavior.

I'm repeating myself, but I think we would all be better off if they instead "Start Acting Like Christ".

And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Honestly, Jesus sounds even more strident than Catholics and other Christians who are opposed to homosexual acts in the present day.

Those who believe opposition to homosexuality is "un-Christian" or "un-Christ-like" need to stop projecting their disordered modern ideas of "justice" onto Christianity.

Who would choose to belong to any organization that would be uncomfortable with the phrase "All are Welcome" ? Shame. No wonder atheism is growing ...... no one is excluded from being a non-believer.....

Fanned and faved. That's the saddest part. Of course the haters will simply fall back on the whole thing of the church dwindling to only a few faithful. Sad how they keep deluding themselves.

Good. Just another way in which the Catholic Church makes itself irrelevant. Hopefully, the church will continue to let outdated orthodoxy (and those who frantically cling to it for their own psychological reasons) dictate its growth strategy because I'm looking forward to the Vatican's going out of business sale on e-bay.

The real question here is why would anybody want to go to a Catholic church??

Memo to Hansy:

You're a moderator, petunia. Part of your job is to keep order in the playpen, not to pour gasoline on the fire. Leave that to your little buddy, loan lightoller, who seems to be all over this page like a fly on a cowpie .

As for your rhetorical question, some people are Catholics for cultural reasons, others find the Mass and Eucharist comforting, still others like the "bigness" and the "universality" of it all and still others are attracted to the idea of an "authority." I could go on but for the certainty I'd bore you to tears. The main point here is not everyone in the known universe is like you, thank God. Pun intended.

Remember, Hansy, moderators are supposed to be moderate....at least some of the time...

And I am going to be. It's you haters that made the cowpie. Not us. You seem to think that GLBT should say nothing about this. We're here, we're queer and you can just GET OVER IT.

And I don't see ANYWHERE that moderators cannot speak their opinion.

Hmmm Didn't know that the "Moderator badge" was a paying position? And in it's description it only claims to give more weight to the holders abuse flags...

Oh pluzeee spare me the ridiculous rant. What is this stupid notion that because I have a moderator badge I have to moderate my comments??? I am not paid to comment here therefore I am free to post whatever I want to post.

PS if you have badge envy please take your concerns to the people who run this forum. I didn't request neither of those badges and I wouldn't care less if I had them.

Well, Dale Andersen--

When the Roman Catholic Church still allows the priest who molested me in my sleep to teach canon law in Canada, I get a bit riled. I have no legal recourse against him because I live - and the perpetration occurred - in the US. I learned later that he was a client at a rehab center for priests in Dittmer, Missouri, in the west St. Louis County area. I hope you understand my being miffed.

The Vatican tells American legislators [1] to enact laws enabling the State to deny Gay men and women the right to marry the person they love, adopt children, serve in the military, teach, coach or have job and housing security. When it not only says this, but that Gay people are like those with contagious disease and mental illness...I get testy as well.

Religions can be very beautiful, even though they are wrong sometimes.
16 hours ago (8:59 AM)
Agreed. And there's something very sad about Dignity. These are people who want to stay connected to the religion they grew up with despite the church's utter contempt for them. But there's nothing to love there. There's certainly no love to be found there—maybe among themselves but certainly not from the church. The catholic church is a toxic, nasty thing. The church tells gay people at every opportunity that they hate them and don't want them. It's time to believe it.

My wish is for gay people everywhere and the people who love them—their parents and siblings and extended families, their friends and neighbors and coworkers—all turn their backs on the catholic church and shun it. It's a kind of prison, but the door is always open; all they have to do is walk out.
