Jan Brewer Vetoes Birther, Campus Gun Bills

Jan Brewer Veto Birther Bill Guns On Campus Bill

Posted: 04/19/11 08:49 AM ET

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed two controversial bills, one mandating proof of U.S. citizenship to run for president, the other allowing guns on college campuses, in a clear setback for conservatives who control the state legislature.

Brewer, who grabbed headlines a year ago when she signed a get-tough state law cracking down on illegal immigrants, vetoed the bills in an announcement late on Monday.

The so-called "birther bill," would have made Arizona the first state in the nation to require presidential candidates prove U.S. citizenship by providing a long form birth certificate, and other forms of proof including baptismal or circumcision certificates, to be placed on the state ballot.

"I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their 'early baptism or circumcision certificates' ... This is a bridge too far," she said.

A former Arizona secretary of state, Brewer said she did not support designating one person as "gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate," as it "could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions."

The Republican-controlled state legislature passed the measure at a time when some foes of President Barack Obama, a Democrat question whether he is a native-born U.S. citizen. Real estate mogul and television reality show host Donald Trump is among those questioning Obama's birth in Hawaii.

Brewer also vetoed a bill that would have made Arizona the second state in the nation to allow an individual to carry a firearm -- either concealed or not -- in the public rights of way on higher education campuses, because it was "so poorly written."

Brewer said shortcomings in the bill included a failure to define "public rights of way" and the inclusion of state schools, where firearms are prohibited by federal and state laws.
Neighboring Utah allows firearms inside campus buildings.

Last April, Brewer caused a national furor when she signed the state's controversial crackdown on immigration, which required police to investigate the immigration status of anyone they detained and suspected of being in the country illegally.

Opponents of the law said it would lead to harassment of Hispanic-Americans, and the Obama administration argued the U.S. Constitution gave the federal government sole authority over immigration matters.

A U.S. federal judge blocked the most controversial parts of the law shortly before it came into effect last July. Arizona appealed the stay, but it was upheld by a federal appeals court in a ruling last week.

Arizona Sen. Steve Gallardo, an outspoken Democrat, said the governor realized that the bills would be bad for the state's image and had nothing to do with the challenges it faces.

"She know that these bills are not going to help with Arizona's image," Gallardo told Reuters.

"All they do is put us in the national spotlight and make us look silly. She's saying she doesn't want that to happen any longer."

I didn't think Jan Brewer had a brain in her head but, on this one, I have to give her props. She may have an ulterior motive but, as one gentleman says below, given who she is, I'll take it.

Watched this and saw this law wanted to see your parents birth cert. also.I would say this could undermine the new immimgrants coming into the country.Lets say a child was born here and his parents were not but became u.s. citizens.I must say the Rep are a cunning mass....check out what just happened in Benton Harbor Mich.

There are enough votes in the Arizona legislature to over ride Brewer's veto, and it looks like that is where the bill is headed...!

This is actually surprising news. Doesn't put her on the top-ten list of wonderful people, but at least there seems to be a glimmer of recognition at the extreme nature of some of the stuff that has been put on the table during her watch.

The reality is that Brewer is uncomfortable with the economic impact of such crazy legislation. AZ lost tons of cash with their illegal alien law. I wonder how many more conventions, tourist, and out of state college students they would miss out on with their birther bill and poorly written gun bill.

This is why they stress drinking the Kool-Aid daily. See what happens when you miss a cup or two?

Well, at least this is a start to some return of sanity to Arizona. I heard on one of the political talk shows that the Arizona business community was giving her He** over these two bills, plus the Alien ID act, since many of the state's businesses were losing money by conventions being cancelled, tourists boycotting travel to AZ. Circumcision certificates? You cannot be serious!

In the meantime, poor Bobby Jindal spoke up about not vetoing a birther bill until he read the part about circumcision.

Old Bobby went running around Home Depot looking for the Do-It-Yourself Home Circumcision Kit.

OUCH

This is PROOF that the tea party is about NOTHING but white Christian Anglo Saxon citizenship and NOTHING else... Please show me otherwise...

Actually I was kind of hoping she would not veto and someone could actually show her otherwise. I would have loved for the President to walk in present his documents, and then him drop trou right there as proof of circumcision. (not that I know he is snipped or anything). The look would be precious and go to show exactly where the TP is willing to take this country.

I think the thought of a black uncircumsised pe nis was more than she could handle.

Jan Brewer spoke directly with the former Republican governor of Hawaii and was informed of the confirmation about BHO's birthplace, so it was hard for her to place much credence in the bill as written. It was a ridiculous bill on it face. Now Bobby Jindal is saying he will sign a birther bill and he has no idea what will be in it when it gets to him. Any governor who says things like that before he even gets the bill is truly stupid. There's no telling what amendments will be added before a bill passes. A lot of bills have poison pills.

Brewer is starting to sober up and realize that she has gone too far in support of lunatics on the right. Her smell of defeat and failure sweat can be detected all across the nation on a breezy day. Her self-terror and self-doubt will begin to resonate with other right wingers who got elected. Their fear is the embarassment they bring to their families, their states and the country. I think they realize that they are one time flukes, now they have their reputations as human beings to worry about.
