The Chicago Blackhawks have been bringing their recently-won Stanley Cup everywhere--and on Sunday, it will be rushed from the NHL draft in Los Angeles directly to Chicago's Gay Pride Parade.

Last week, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported that the Chicago Gay Hockey Association invited the champion Chicago Blackhawks to Sunday's Pride Parade. Even though the Blackhawks will be in Los Angeles this weekend for the NHL draft, Blackhawks President John McDonough told Sneed the team is rerouting the Stanley Cup to be in Chicago for the parade, which kicks off Sunday at noon.

Hawks defenseman Brent Sopel will represent the team in the parade, joined by his wife and children. Sneed reports:

"The power of the Cup is incomprehensible, and we recognize the importance of doing this," said McDonough, who has arranged for the Stanley Cup to be flown back from the National Hockey League draft in Los Angeles 15 hours early. "It's important for the city and important for the franchise."

...

"The Stanley Cup has become the biggest celebrity of all. It has its own personality and charm. We will be proud to participate in the parade. And Brent Sopel is one of the truly great guys. To have the cup part of the parade is just another great part of the celebration."

Sopel told Sneed he will also be marching in honor of Brendan Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke. Brendan was killed in a car accident two months after coming out late last year.

"When Brendan came out, Brian stood by him, and his whole family stood by him, like every family should," Sopel said. "We teach our kids about accepting everybody. Tolerate everybody, to understand where everyone is coming from."

The Chicago Cubs will also be showing their support at this year's parade. Sneed reports that for the first time in the parade's history, the Cubs will have a float in the parade. Ernie Banks will be on the float, since the team has a game that day. It will be the first float sponsored by any major Chicago sports team.

"It's just the news we wanted to hear," CGHA President Andrew Sobotka told Sneed about the Staney Cup coming to Pride. "For the Blackhawks to do this is amazing. It is wonderful to know everyone is helping to make 2010 a year to break down barriers."

How is Sopel representing the team when the Hawks just traded him to Atlanta Thrashers?

To bad the Sox can't be there, but it is baseball season. Everyone deserves to see Stanley in Chicago. Since the Cubs are not doing anything, good to see them there. Hey get the Bulls, there not doing anything either. Lets take this parade all the way to Atlanta and get our players back!!!

The Sox and Cubs had actually a game that day (Crosstown Classic). Mr. Cub Ernie Banks was on the Cubs float to represent the organization.

LOVE trumps HATE. That's a rare occasion these days. For this to happen in the city with outrageous gun violence the Chicago Hawks deserves another honor.

Wow. What a fantastic thing that these two teams are doing! I've long been a proud Cubs fan, but this just gives me one more reason to be a huge supporter of The Real America's team (screw you, Braves).

Don't worry. Braves go beating up the Cubbies. The Sox showed them what Chicago is about.

As a St. Louisan, and new hockey-fan, I hate to see the Blackhawks (or any team from up north) as champions. That said, They Hawks deserve credit for this. I hope the champions of other leagues will start doing things like this too. (Lakers, are you listening?)

Deafening roar of welcome for both teams during the parade, but especially for the Stanley Cup and Sopel.

LOL, looks like I'm going to have to learn something about hockey so I can follow the gay-friendly Blackhawks.

Looks like I'm going to be spending my whole month seeing Lord Stan's Cup at parades... and that's just fine with me!

How could I be more proud of Brent Sopel and all of the Hawks? What gentlemen. What class. I'm not gay, but gays are part of us -- part of our population -- and deserve to have the Stanley Cup there for their special moment. Kudos.

Honestly, I couldn't imagine being any prouder of the Chicago Blackhawks. I've been a fan since I was 7 years old. Every time in the last year I think I couldn't love the team more, they raise the bar.

Hey kids, don't be like General McChrystal; be like the Chicago Blackhawks.

A tip of the cap to both the Ricketts and Wirtz families!

Wow, this is spectacular news!
The Blackhawks organization is all class (and I'm a Red Wings fan!)

Sopel, you are a class act! I wish you and your family all the best!
