Question: What is America's oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication?

The Hartford Courant traces its roots to a weekly that started in 1764, but it did not become a daily until Sept. 12, 1837 -- eight years after The Providence Journal. The Courant calls itself the country's oldest newspaper in continuous publication.

The New York Post began daily publication Nov. 16, 1801, almost 30 years before The Providence Journal. The Post suspended publication during strikes in 1958 and 1978. The Post calls itself the oldest daily in the country.

In Providence, the twice-weekly Manufacturers' & Farmers' Journal started publication on Jan. 3, 1820. On July 21, 1829, its publishers introduced The Providence Daily Journal, and General Advertiser.

Answer: The Providence Journal is America's oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication.
