Draw a Wolf

Tuesday June 21, 2011
Draw this gorgeous wolf - or werewolf - in graphite pencil. This wolf drawing tutorial was created for us by Michael Hames, whose experience as an artist and teacher is evident in the clear structure and beautiful textures that he develops in this drawing. Michael is a Canadian artist whose work is widely published and exhibited - and rightly so, with a combination of technical excellence and aesthetic sensitivity.

Are You On Facebook and Twitter?

Friday June 17, 2011
I'd be surprised if you aren't - it seems like half the world (at least those of us fortunate enough to be able to afford computers) is on Facebook. Do come and visit my About Drawing / Sketching Facebook page - I'd love to 'meet' you there! Feel free to post a message! I don't spam the page with updates, just a few weekly links to the blog and an occasional note. If it gets too busy, it's easy to 'hide' the feed (you just click the cross that shows when you mouse over the posts on your own profile, and choose 'hide all by...') - that way you can still occasionally visit and participate when you want.

Now about this Twitter thing. I have a Twitter identity. You can find me at @aboutdrawsketch. The latest blog post goes straight to Twitter, so that's an easy way to keep in touch. I'm also determined to become a more involved Twitterer! I just have to figure out how to actually say something in so few words! So please come and follow me, I'll follow you back if you don't look like a spammer. It would be great if you'd help me find some cool artists to follow.

Sketching Hands

Tuesday June 14, 2011
Stuck for a subject? Draw hands! They have lots of tricky bits to work on, you can change them into interesting poses - even grip objects - and best of all, for most people, there's a willing model attached to your non-master hand.
Why not do a page of hands in different styles?
  • Experiment with gestural drawing
  • Draw a hand that is jagged and anxious
  • Use soft and thoughtful line
  • Be elegantly expressive.

  • Vary poses and props. Draw a hand holding a steaming coffee cup, or a toy gun. Soft objects are even more challenging - scrunching fabric, fur or running through hair. As always, good lighting is important in allowing you to use light and shade to model the subject.

Tip: when using your own hand as a model, try closing one eye to remove parallax - thats the way things look different through each eye. It makes it hard to draw things accurately when they are close to you.

Draw a Cartoon Shark

Monday June 13, 2011
I must admit to a fondness for sharks - so long as I don't have to get too close! Such amazing predators. I can't imagine any real shark going veggie like Bruce ('fish are friends, not food') in Finding Nemo. With their beady eyes and sharp teeth real sharks are more than a little bit scary, so Shawn has created this cute and cuddly, kid-friendly shark for us to draw. He looks just a little bit dopey and 'mostly harmless'. Reminds me of a certain Australian politician... Draw a Cartoon Shark
