David Ragan Picks Up First Career Sprint Cup Win

Tuesday July 5, 2011

It is always nice to see a first-timer in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Victory Lane.  David Ragan is, by all accounts, a nice guy off the track which makes his win even bettter.  He is one of those drivers that very few people will ever say bad things about.

He had a fast car on Saturday night and a dedicated teammate (Matt Kenseth) who stayed in place and pushed Ragan to the checkered flag as chaos reigned in the closing laps of the 2011 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Know Your NASCAR Nicknames

Saturday July 2, 2011

Through the years NASCAR racing drivers, tracks and crew members have spawned many colorful and interesting nicknames.

Can you match the right nickname to the right person? How about naming a race track solely based on its nickname? This fun quiz will test your knowledge of NASCAR nicknames.

2011 Season Turns The Corner

Thursday June 30, 2011

This weekend the 2011 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway marks the traditional halfway point of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season.  It's not mathematically the halfway point, but as the first track to be visited twice it is the honorary halfway point. More importantly this weekend marks the start of the Race to the Chase.

Remember that NASCAR tweaked the Chase qualifying formula for 2011.  This year only the top ten drivers lock in on points through the first 26 races.  The last two spots go to drivers who have the most wins in positions 11 through 20.

Right now Denny Hamlin in 11th has one win and a good shot at a Wild Card spot since there are no others  in 11th - 20th with race wins. There are three race winners outside the top 20 with one win each including Brad Keselowski in 22nd, Regan Smith 28th and Trevor Bayne who is ineligible.

Any driver in 11-20 in points who wins a race could vault to the top of the Wild Card standings.  This should be an interesting Race to the Chase.

NASCAR Justice

Monday June 27, 2011

We've all seen it happen hundreds of times before but Sunday's 2011 Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway was the first time I can remember both drivers freely admitting that they dumped each other intentionally.

Tony Stewart said that he was sick of drivers blocking and admitted that he intentionally booted Brian Vickers.  Then, after exacting his revenge, Vickers admitted that he intentionally wrecked Stewart.  To their credit neither driver seemed too upset about it.  Stewart ended up with a wrecked race car and both drivers finished deep in the field (36th and 39th).

This was some of the most blatant NASCAR justice that we've ever seen.  I guess this is what NASCAR envisioned when they told drivers to "have at it" last year? I don't know. It was entertaining but it didn't look much like racing to me.
