Programs and Services

Walk-ins

Pre-law walk-ins are 15-minute meetings. The Pre-Law Advisor generally holds walk-in sessions from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursdays. You can sign up for walk-ins on the scheduled walk-in date beginning at 9:30 a.m.. You must sign up in person at the Career Education Center. A walk-in session is an opportunity to address relatively narrow topics. For example, during a walk-in, you can ask if you have a "safety school" on your list, discuss personal statement topics or consider whether you should retake the LSAT. If you have broader concerns (e.g., Should I go to law school? How do I decide where to apply?), or for résumé or personal statement reviews, you should start with a 30 minute advising appointment.

Advising Appointments

Pre-law advising appointments are 30-minute meetings. In an advising session, the Pre-Law Advisor can, among other things, help you to decide whether law school is right for you, answer questions regarding the law school application process, review your résumé and personal statement and help you to generate a list of law schools that fits your needs. To schedule an appointment, please stop by the front desk of the Career Education Center.

Personal Statement Critiques

The Pre-Law Advisor will review and critique personal statements. To receive a critique, e-mail your statement to the Pre-Law Advisor at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled pre-law advising appointment. Please only forward statements that are in near-final form. Your name, school, major, class year and contact information (including e-mail address) should appear on your statement. Please include the date and time of your appointment in the e-mail. Comments will be given at the pre-law advising appointment. Alternatively, you are free to bring your personal statement to an advising appointment and the Pre-Law Advisor will review it on the spot.

Workshops

Whether, When and How to Apply to Law School: This workshop teaches the fundamentals of the law school application process and is aimed at those who are just beginning to consider a legal career. Workshops are held throughout the year.

How to Write an Impressive Personal Statement: This workshop addresses how to choose a personal statement topic, offers writing tips, and discusses common traps that you should avoid. Workshops are held throughout the year.

Other Pre-Law Programs

Law School Visits:  In the fall, several law school admissions officers visit the Georgetown University campus. Learn what distinguishes one school from another, and talk with those who will be reading your file.

Georgetown University Law Center Group Interview:  This event is open only to current applicants to GULC. Andy Cornblatt, Assistant Dean of Admissions, listens to you and your peers discuss a hypothetical. The group interview offers a great way to attach a face and a voice to your file.

Financing Your Law School Education: A representative from a law school financial aid office will discuss how law schools determine cost of attendance, types of financial aid available, borrowing processes, role of credit, repayment options, the true cost of borrowing, and the impact of debt on job choice.

Law Spotlights:  What is it really like to be a law student? What is it really like to be a lawyer? At the Law Spotlight, a panel of lawyers will speak about their law school experiences (life as a 1L, extra-curricular activities, internships, journals, clinics...), career paths and practice areas (firm, public interest, government and non-traditional).

Please check the pre-law calendar and read your Career Education Center e-mails for dates and further information about these and other pre-law programs.
