What are USATODAY.com’s advertising guidelines?

Pop-unders
USATODAY.com allows no more than two pop-unders to be served to a user’s browser in a 24-hour period of time. Pop-unders launched from our site are served via reputable third parties companies only. These companies do not set any type of “spy ware” or other applications that would cause harm to a user’s computer.

Interstitials
USATODAY.com allows advertisers to run commercial breaks or interstitials on our site. The number of interstitials a user sees depends on the section he or she visits and the amount of time spent on the site. Users will, on average, see no more then two interstitials per 24-hour period.

Ad Testing
Before an ad is set live on USATODAY.com, it must pass through our QA process. In our testing process we check to make sure the ad is not performing any type of functions that would cause harm to a user’s computer or network. Any ad that does not pass our QA process is dismissed from the site. We also perform periodic checks on ads that are live on the site to make sure they are functioning up to our standards.

Can advertisers set cookies through USATODAY.com?
Please note that USATODAY.com does allow other companies that are advertising or researching on the site to set and access a user’s cookies. Any advertiser or partner is subject to their own privacy policy. Are USATODAY.com’s e-mail newsletters free of charge?
All of USATODAY.com’s e-mail newsletters are free to our users. To sign up, simply follow the instructions at: http://email.usatoday.com

Why am I not receiving my e-mail newsletters?
If you do not receive a validation or confirmation e-mail from USATODAY.com, it is likely that your Internet Service Provider or desktop e-mail software is filtering or blocking mail from USATODAY.com. Make sure to check your inbox settings to allow e-mail from newsletters@e.usatoday.com and to bypass any bulk or spam folders.

To learn how to do this in your specific e-mail client, please click here.

If the delivery problem persists you should contact your ISP and provide them with the newsletters@e.usatoday.com sender address and notify them that the opt-in e-mail that you have requested is not being successfully delivered.

How do I ensure delivery of my e-mail newsletters?

To ensure delivery, you should first add USATODAY.com to your e-mail address book. E-mail providers may impose some restrictions on how our e-mail is delivered to your in-box. In order to reduce any interruptions in service or to ensure that our newsletters go directly to your e-mail inbox and not into your spam/bulk folder, it is important to add newsletters@e.usatoday.com to your address book. To learn how to do this for your specific e-mail client, please click here.

How do I change my e-mail address?
To change your e-mail address, simply log in to http://reg.e.usatoday.com or click on the “ To UNSUBSCRIBE, please click here ” link found at the bottom of the newsletter. Now click on the “Change e-mail address ” link found on the Subscriber Information page. Your old e-mail address will automatically be populated in the “Old” field and you simply have to add your new e-mail address into the “New E-mail” and “Confirm New E-mail” fields. You will receive a confirmation e-mail to your new address to verify that the change has taken place.

I am trying to unsubscribe from your e-mail newsletters, but your system is saying I’m not subscribed. Why is this happening?
You may be trying to unsubscribe from an address to which you are not actually subscribed. This may be the case because of subtle changes that you are unaware of in your e-mail address. This is typically the case of corporate e-mail accounts. To ensure that you are indeed unsubscribing the correct e-mail address, we include this address in the footer of your newsletter. Please check this address and unsubscribe accordingly. If you have further questions, please send an e-mail to: emailnewsletters@usatoday.com.

Customer Information Collection

Why is USATODAY.com collecting this information?
USATODAY.com is an advertising supported site. This means that in order for us to continue to offer access to our site free of charge to you, we need to be able to better server our advertisers. We are beginning to do this by supplying our advertisers with the basic (zip code, age and gender) demographic information on our users. This is not done in an attempt to personally identify each user, rather to serve more targeted advertising to specific buckets of users in aggregate.

What about my privacy concerns?
Your privacy is important to us. We only collect the minimum amount of information that is pertinent to advertisers. We, nor will our advertisers, be permitted to contact you via e-mail or by any other means with regard to this data. However, if you have opted-in to receive e-mail newsletters or offers from USATODAY.com at http://email.usatoday.com, you will receive this information to which you have subscribed. For more information on our privacy policy, please visit our guidelines at: http://privacy.usatoday.com.

What about information collected on children under the age of 13 (COPPA compliancy)?
Any information collected from a user who enters a birth date that indicates that they are 13 years of age or younger, is not stored in our database. We purge this information in order to stay compliant with the federal Childrens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). For more information on our compliance with COPPA, please visit our privacy policy located at: http://privacy.usatoday.com.

Why do I only receive this information collection form on certain areas of the site?
We are just beginning to collect this demographic information on our users. In the future, we may be asking for this information on additional areas of the site. For right now however, we are only collecting your information on limited areas.

Is signing up for your Travel e-mail newsletter required?
Subscribing to our Travel e-mail newsletter is optional. However, if you do sign up, you will need to provide your e-mail address. We will only use your e-mail address for this daily newsletter mailing and not sell it to third parties. For more on this, please see our privacy policy at: http://privacy.usatoday.com.

Once you have subscribed to this newsletter, you can manage your subscription at: http://email.usatoday.com.

Will I be prompted to submit my information every time I visit your site?
You will be prompted to submit this information once, provided that you have your cookies enabled or that you do not clear your cookies on a regular basis. To make sure that your cookies are enabled, please use the information listed below:

If you use Internet Explorer, visit the Microsoft Web site.

If you use a Netscape browser, visit the Netscape page for more information.

How do I close this form?
In order to successfully view the story that you have requested, you must complete the form by filling out all of the required fields and click on the ‘Go’ button. You will then proceed on to the page you requested.

Website browsers and cookies

Why is it that when I click on a link, I’m taken to a different story?
If the content appears outdated, or a link takes you to the "wrong page" it is most likely due to your browser software caching. Caching is a process which attempts to save you time on the internet by saving images and content -a kind of storage space on your hard drive. By loading a page from cache, your software responds more quickly than if it searches the web and servers for the page you have specified. However, if your software has not refreshed its cache, you stand the chance of getting the "wrong page" due to the fact that it has been updated since your last visit. If this occurs, click on the "Reload/Refresh" button at the top of your browser. This will refresh your cache for that particular page. Note: the only way to completely clear your cache is to go into your browser configuration.

How do I set USATODAY.com as my homepage?
Setting USATODAY.com as your homepage is done within the Internet Options area of your web browser. You add http://www.usatoday.com in the field provided.

What are cookies?
A cookie is a small file we send your Web browser. This is how we identify you while you visit USATODAY.com and determine whether you have already given us information before.

The cookie is stored on your computer and keeps you from having to re-enter information each time you visit USATODAY.com. Cookies also help us serve you unique content (personalized weather for your zip code, for example) as well as advertising.

More detailed information about cookies can be found on the Web. If you use Internet Explorer, visit the Microsoft Web site.

If you use a Netscape browser, visit the Netscape page for more information.

Can advertisers set cookies through USATODAY.com?
Please note that USATODAY.com does allow other companies that are advertising or researching on the site to set and access a user’s cookies. Any advertiser or partner is subject to their own privacy policy. These cookies are used to track the behavior of a user, make sure the user’s experience is not impacted in a negative fashion, and for reporting purposes.
