Few universities in the world offer the extraordinary range and diversity of research opportunities that Georgetown students and faculty enjoy. The university’s location in the nation’s capital provides unparalleled opportunities for learning at leading scientific centers and institutes as well as top policy think tanks.

We look for ways to apply our research and scholarship to help meet the challenges of our age, whether this means working for social justice or fostering greater cross-cultural understanding.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies Georgetown as a Very High Research Activity (RU/VH) University. This classification reflects our commitment to an intellectual environment that is conducive to the discovery and communication of new knowledge.

Across the university, our researchers secured more than $200 million in research awards during fiscal year 2010. Our largest research center – Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) – is home to more than 400 scientists working on basic and clinical research projects and 300 active clinical trials. These researchers focus on cancer, neuroscience, child health and development and global health. Across the university we are researching issues in international development, public policy, biology, psychology and physics.
