An uncritical look at good Libertarian thinking
The Cato Daily Podcast is a valuable, concise presentation of Libertarian ideas but has a serious flaw. The usually thought-provoking content is marred by a fake interview format which comes across as highly scripted at best and utterly uncritical at worst. This should be replaced with short, conference-style presentations with only a brief introduction by the host. Despite the slow-pitch softball questioning most Cato associates present well-reasoned arguments supported by facts, but the lack of critique fails to challenge weak points and treats even the occasional weak, pseudo-intellectual thesis with full credulity (witness the Oct 2006 episode "300 Million and Counting" featuring Daniel T. Griswold - nice rhetoric for those who agree but embarrassingly feeble for an academic). Only those rare guests who don't quite hold to the Cato party line get something resembling challenging questions (see the Oct 2006 "The Libertarian Democrat" parts I and II featuring Markos "Kos" Moulitsas). Bottom line: Needs a redesign but well worth a listen.
Good Stuff
Very informative, and not your typical rah-rah lets hear it for Big Govt. podcast.
Excellent!
Anyone looking for a thoughtful, unapologetic critique of government policy and of those who support intrusive government should definitely give this podcast a listen. At under 10 minutes, it's short enough to not be boring, yet is packed with useful information.
