Lou Jacobson, editor

Prior to the launch of CongressNow, Louis Jacobson spent three years as deputy editor of Roll Call and originated Roll Call’s “Out There” column on politics in the states. Earlier, Jacobson spent nearly 11 years with National Journal covering lobbying, politics and policy, and served as a contributing writer for two of its affiliates, CongressDaily and Government Executive. He has been a frequent freelance contributor to The Economist, The Washington Post, Washington CityPaper, The Rothenberg Political Report and The Wall Street Journal, where he wrote a bimonthly column for the Breakaway section on government and small business. He served as principal contributing writer for the 2004 edition of “The Almanac of American Politics” and as a contributing writer for the 2000 edition.

George Cahlink, managing editor

George Cahlink has covered Congress and the Pentagon for roughly a decade, as a correspondent for Congressional Quarterly, Defense Daily, Government Executive, Federal Times and Inside the Army. He has served as an embedded journalist with military forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. He also has been a freelance contributor to National Journal, Air Force magazine and Foreign Service Journal.

Geof Koss, staff writer

Geof Koss covers energy, the environment and transportation for CongressNow. Prior to joining CongressNow, he spent five years as a reporter and editor covering environmental policy for Inside Washington Publishers, most recently as managing editor of InsideEPA.com. He's also covered education and American Indian affairs for Colorado newspapers and been an editor for such daily papers as The Bulletin in Bend, Ore., and the Durango Herald in Colorado.

Stephen Langel, staff writer

Stephen Langel covers health care, labor and entitlement programs, including Social Security. For seven years, he covered Capitol Hill and regulatory policy for Inside Washington Publishers and FDAnews. During that time he wrote about political and policy developments in the environmental, energy and pharmaceutical sectors. His beat included the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

Charlene Carter, staff writer

Charlene Carter covers financial services, commerce, housing and telecommunications. She most recently covered legal affairs for Congressional Quarterly, reporting on the House and Senate Judiciary and Small Business committees. She has also been a contributing writer for Black Enterprise and Atlanta Tribune magazines.

Jay Heflin, staff writer

Jay Heflin covers tax policy, trade and agriculture for CongressNow. He has covered the Congressional debate over income taxes for more than six years, for such outlets as Tax Notes and United Communications Group. He most recently covered accounting and tax issues for Thomson newsletters, while also serving as a contributing writer to CongressNow since its launch. He was the co-author, with Richard D. Thau, of "Generations Apart: Xers Vs. Boomers Vs. the Elderly" and "Get It Together By 30 and Be Set for the Rest of Your Life."

Vicki Needham, staff writer

Vicki Needham covers budget and appropriations issues for CongressNow. She had most recently been freelancing for CongressDaily. Prior to that, she was a Washington-based editor with the Orange County Register. Earlier in her career, she spent more than six years as a reporter and editorial assistant with Congressional Quarterly. She has also worked as a reporter for the American Banker and the Hilton Head Island Packet. She earned a master's in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Eugene Mulero, staff writer

Eugene Mulero covers defense, homeland security and intelligence for CongressNow. He was previously a reporter with National Journal magazine and has several years of daily reporting experience with Gannett newspapers. He has been a general assignment reporter for he Arizona Republic and freelanced for a variety of magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times.
