Engineering students perform musical for eleventh year

You are probably asking yourself, "Just what is an engineering musical?" The musical is part of an annual tradition that sees a group of engineering students join together to create a singing and dancing extravaganza dubbed the McMaster Engineering Musical. Complete with a full band and the students' unique interpretations of popular songs, the eleventh musical titled, Mathemadness kicks-off tonight.

"The engineering musical is an excellent opportunity for engineering students to explore their talents outside of a technical context. Whether it is acting, writing, singing, dancing, playing an instrument or buildings props, the musical offers something for everyone," said engineering student Allan Kean, director of the musical. "And after months of hard work and dedication, the cast, crew and band all comes together to put on a wonderfully unique and thrilling production that celebrates their experiences at McMaster."

This year's musical is no exception from past amusing plots. Mathemadness revolves around the experiences of first year student Kyle who must save his new found friends at McMaster. Like any first year student, Kyle is quite anxious to make some new friends at McMaster. He achieves this quite easily, but soon a sinister sessional lectuer, Corneillus Maxwell, beings to corrupt students' minds and now Kyle must fight to keep his friends together and restore order to McMaster University.

Preparations for the musical began in September after a round of auditions. Once the cast was chosen, the students worked week by week to create the musical from scratch. Students ran the entire production from writing the songs and script, to building sets and performing the music.

The 11th Annual McMaster Engineering Musical, Mathemadness takes place on March 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School, which is located at 130 York Blvd, Hamilton. Tickets are $8 or $12 with a round-trip bus ride to the theatre. Tickets are for sale in the lobby the John Hodgins Engineering Building and online.
