‘Vote at Eight’ campaign

Ananth Krishnan

Would you skip your vacation to stay home and cast your ballot? That’s the question many Mumbai voters will have to answer this election as voting day happens to fall on the cusp of a four-day holiday weekend.

Mumbai goes to polls on April 30, Thursday, and May 1, Maharashtra Day, is a State holiday.

To encourage holiday-makers to vote before they head for holidays, citizen groups have launched a ‘Vote at Eight’ campaign.

“We’re very concerned that turnout will be severely impacted as a lot of people will leave for the holiday weekend,” says Sandeep Kumar of the citizen group Action for good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI).
