— At least one San Diego police officer opened fire and wounded a burglary suspect who reportedly came at them with a knife in the Park West neighborhood Thursday night.

Officers were sent to investigate a reported burglary in progress in a three-story medical building on Third Avenue at Upas Street at 10:12 p.m., San Diego police said. A witness, who was inside one of the businesses in the complex, told dispatchers he heard glass breaking on the second floor.

The first officers reached the building, which appeared to house Upas Pharmacy on the ground floor, at 10:17 p.m. They searched the second floor and discovered that the front windows of a dental office had been broken.

As the officers approached, they saw a suspect crawling through the broken window, carrying property from the building, according to police Lt. Ernie Herbert.

Police said the suspect moved toward the officers with a large knife in hand, ignoring commands to stop. One of the officers - who has been with the department three years - shot the suspect, causing the man to collapse to the floor.

He was taken to a hospital by paramedics. Police have not identified the suspect, but said he appeared to be 25 to 30 years old.

No officers were injured, police Officer David Stafford said.

Homicide detectives were called in, as is routine with officer-involved shootings. No further information was immediately available.
