Alexandra Tynion, class of 2012, is a native of Milwaukee, WI. Though she has not yet decided on a major, she is interested in photography, field hockey, and fashion. She hopes to study photography at Georgetown and eventually wants to pursue a career which will use her creative side.

Please tell us a little about your Ignatius Seminar "An Artist's Perspective: The Creative Process" with Professor Charles.

In the class we learned a gamut of art techniques, beginning with painting and creating a design out of five black shapes then moving into our photography unit where we learned basic shooting techniques. Finally we ended by creating a Joseph Cornell Box.

Did you find that Professor Charles' own personal art influenced the class?

The final project that we did in class (the Joseph Cornell box) reflected most on Professor Charles' art. Like the box sculpture we did, he creates unique sculptures. Although I missed the visit to his studio, our class was very impressed with his art.

What was your favorite part of the seminar?

My favorite days were our presentation days of our photographs and our artwork. It was fun to hear why and how my peers conceptualized their art pieces.

What makes Professor Charles stand out as a professor?

His love for art is contagious. For me, as a student, I really tried to put thought into my work, which Professor Charles emphasized during our presentations. Doing this made me care more about my art than I thought I would have at the start.
