History Bowl Information

Congratulations to Commonwealth Governor's School (10-0) for becoming our first undefeated team and capturing the championship of the Second Annual Georgetown University History Bowl on Saturday, March 19! Severna Park (9-1) took home second place, and Georgetown Prep (8-2) placed third.

Congratulations also to our All-Stars, Andrew F. of Commonwealth Governor's School (5.9 TU/round), Michael M. of Paul VI (4.0), Tom M. of Severna Park (3.8), Mike B. of Calvert Hall (3.5) and Monica M. of Severna Park (2.9).

We now have pictures of the competition and of the awards ceremony as well as full results posted (added 05-08-2005).

Congratulations to all participants and good luck on your AP exams! We hope everyone enjoyed the tournament, and we hope to see all the schools back next year.

General Description

The Georgetown University History Bowl will be a College Bowl-style academic tournament for local students enrolled in European History courses. It will consist of 11 round-robin rounds with one bye per team. Each round will last approximately 30 minutes and will consist of 15 toss-up questions, each with a bonus question, covering all areas of European history from the High Renaissance to the outbreak of World War I. Each team may play only four students in a given round, but teams can include up to four additional students to serve as alternates.

About Phi Alpha Theta and Beta Pi Chapter

Phi Alpha Theta is the national collegiate honor society for history. It was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas and has grown to include 830 chapters at colleges and universities around the country. Its active members are upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and professors.

Georgetown's chapter of the honor society, Beta Pi chapter, was founded in 1948 and is the oldest chapter in Phi Alpha Theta's Mid-Atlantic (Maryland-Delaware-Washington, D.C.) region. Former President Bill Clinton became a member of Beta Pi Chapter in 1967 when he was an undergraduate at Georgetown. Phi Alpha Theta members gather during the academic year for various activities that have some relation to history. For example, Beta Pi chapter hosts a Halloween screening of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and lecture on Vlad Tepes, walking tours of historic Georgetown, and a Research Series where advanced undergraduates and doctoral students help critique drafts of each other's historical writing. It also takes students to the annual Mid-Atlantic Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference, where Beta Pi members have a tradition of winning "best paper" prizes.
