How to Apply for Federal Need-Based Aid

Federal Aid Available

Financial aid is available to help students meet educational costs for graduate study from several federal student loan and employment programs, often referred to as "Title IV" assistance. These programs include the Federal Stafford and Federal Perkins Loan programs, and the Federal Work-Study program. Eligibility for these programs is dependent on demonstrated financial need.

To apply for Need-Based Financial Aid:

All applicants for federal need-based financial aid must complete and submit the following documents:

• Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• Georgetown University Graduate Supplement

The required school code for Georgetown University to be used on the FAFSA is 001445.

In addition, the Office of Student Financial Services reserves the right to request further documentation in support of your aid application, if in its discretion additional information or clarification is deemed necessary. It is in your best interest to respond to all requests for information as quickly as possible.

To apply for merit-based scholarships, assistantships, or fellowships from Georgetown University, contact your  academic program, visit the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences website, the Graduate Biomedical Sciences Program website, or the McDonough School of Business MBA Full-time Program website..

When to Apply

Georgetown’s Office of Student Financial Services accepts financial aid applications from graduate students throughout the academic year. However, if you are a prospective new student, to ensure that you receive information about your eligibility for financial aid when you receive your admission decision, you should apply for aid at the same time that you apply for admission to Georgetown. Application dates vary by graduate program. Continuing graduate students are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid by April 15. Typically it takes three weeks for a financial aid application to be processed by the federal government, reviewed by Georgetown University, and a graduate student’s eligibility for need-based financial aid determined.

Due to limited funding, Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Work-Study is not offered to all applicants.

Students must reapply for financial aid each year they intend to enroll at Georgetown.
