Application Requirements Checklist

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are required to submit the online application form and a set of specified additional credentials to support the application.  Using the online application system, applicants will submit most required application materials online.  Please note that supplemental documents uploaded and submitted with the online application should ONLY be submitted electronically. Sending duplicate paper copies will delay the processing of the application.

Please use the Application Requirements Checklist below to determine what materials are required for your program of interest.  Once you have applied online and submitted the application, you can access the status of application materials received through the online status checklist.  To access this checklist, login to your Georgetown online application and click on "Application for Admission" (please remember to save your PIN and password).

Please note that official paper documents, such as transcripts, may not be photocopied or faxed. The online application form should be submitted, with all required documents, by the deadline given in the Admissions section of each graduate program listingWhere possible on paper documents, please identify your name, program to which you are applying, term of application, and birthdate on your submitted hard copy credentials.

 ONLINE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS CHECKLIST:

1.     Application Form

Submission of the electronic application form will activate your application to the Graduate School.  The application form must be submitted by the deadline date posted in the Admissions section of the selected graduate program listing.  The online application system allows for the electronic submission of the application form and supporting application documents, such as the personal statement, resume, and writing sample, as well as online recommendations.  All hard copy documents submitted in support of the application should be submitted in a self-assembled packet according to the guidelines outlined below.

2.    Non-refundable Application Fee

The application form must be submitted with a non-refundable application fee.  Requests for waiver of the application fee are not accepted.  The Graduate School requires that an application fee accompany any application to one of our graduate programs.  Applicants will not receive a Graduate School decision on their application if the application fee is not paid.  Please note that cash is not accepted as a form of payment.

  • $80 online application fee - pay by credit card at the time of application submission; check or money order

Checks or money orders should be made payable to "Georgetown University" in U.S. dollars.  Payment in foreign currency is not accepted.  Clearly write the following information on the check or money order:  applicant name, program applying to, and term of application.

Fee exceptions:

  • Students who are currently enrolled in a master’s program at Georgetown University and are requesting Ph.D. status in the same program.

3.     Academic Statement of Purpose

A 500-word Academic Statement of Purpose should be prepared and submitted with the application.  The personal statement should address your intellectual interests, academic and professional objectives, and proposed topic(s) of graduate study.  Some programs have additional guidelines for submission of the statement of purpose.  Please review the Online Graduate School Catalog  for details listed by specific graduate programs.

  • Online Statement of Purpose - Upload in the appropriate section and submit with the online application for automatic inclusion in your application record.  Do not send a hard copy version of the online personal statement to avoid delays.
  • Dual Degree Programs - Submit one statement of purpose reflecting your interest and capabilities for studies in both academic programs.

4.     Official Transcripts of Academic Coursework and Degrees Earned

Applicants for admission must provide hard copy official transcripts of ALL work beyond secondary school - undergraduate coursework, graduate coursework, study abroad courses, community college courses, and non-degree courses.  A transcript is official when:

  • submitted to the Graduate School in an envelope which is issued by the institution and sealed by your university's Registrar's office (or equivalent office);
  • submitted to the Graduate School from the institution via a secure electronic delivery, such as Scrip-Safe
  • requested from the appropriate institution's Registrar, returned to you, and included unopened in your self-assembled application packet for mailing.

Applicants for admission will need to provide official transcripts or documents showing conferral of all degrees previously awarded.  If a particular degree has not been awarded at the time of application:

  • the Graduate School will request documentation of the degree conferral at the time of admission;
  • admitted students intending to matriculate must submit all documentation of coursework and degrees awarded before class registration.

Official Foreign Transcripts should be accompanied by a notarized translation into English.  The official notarized translation should be submitted to the Graduate School in a sealed envelope, signed across the seal by the notary.

International applicants who attend institutions outside of the United States are strongly encouraged to submit their transcripts in the form of World Education Services (WES) ICAP evaluations and should note that official transcripts are delivered electronically with their evaluations through WES. WES evaluations can take the place of official transcripts as long as they come to the Graduate School directly from WES and include a copy of the official transcripts you had evaluated.

Photocopied / faxed documents cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.

5.     Official Recommendations

Three official recommendations are required by the Graduate School unless your program only mandates two.  These recommendations must be from persons in positions to appraise the applicant's potential for graduate study.  The Graduate School requires use of the online recommendation system.  The online application utilizes a secure online recommendation system which will:

  • automatically email your recommendation providers with instructions for online submission of the recommendation;
  • allow applicants to track recommendations received or not received and follow up with recommenders who still need to submit their appraisals;
  • expedite the processing of the recommendations, which will be included in the online application once submitted.
