Thinking about keeping a motor vehicle in D.C.? If so, read this first...and think again...

The University discourages students from brining a motor vehicle to the District of Columbia for various reasons:

1. The University does not provide parking for students.

2. Registering a motor vehicle in the District involves significant time and expense. See http://dmv.dc.gov/serv/registration/register.shtm. Note that students living close to the campus in areas designated according to Advisory Neighborhood Commissions -- ANC2E (essentially the neighborhoods of Georgetown and Burleith), ANC3D (Foxhall Village), and ANC2A (essentially Foggy Bottom and the West End neighborhoods) must register their vehicles with the District. The reciprocity permits available in some parts of the District for full-time college or university students temporarily living in the District are not available to students living in the areas designed in ANC2E, ANC2A, and ANC3D.

3. The number of parking spaces in D.C. is limited and parking in a lot or garage is expensive.

4. Metro DC's Metro Transit System, is economical and easily accessible: http://www.wmata.com/  It's also an eco-friendly way to travel!! And keep in mind that the University's GUTS service provides transportation to the nearby Metro Stations: http://otm.georgetown.edu/guts/index.cfm.

Students who still choose to bring their cars from home must register their automobiles in D.C. and must comply with the rules of Registration for Out-of-State Automobiles(ROSA).

If your car will be in the District for 30 or more consecutive days, you are required to register and display a valid D.C. inspection sticker and tags when parked.

Parking enforcement officials monitor the Zone 2 residential area around campus to ensure the proper registration of vehicles. If your car has been observed a second time within a fifteen-day period, you may receive a warning notice stating that your vehicle is eligible for the issuance of a ticket and/or impoundment if you fail to register.

Before you can register your car, it must pass inspection and you must obtain a D.C. driver's license and insurance.

All Georgetown students who have a vehicle with them at school must report their vehicle's information to Off Campus Student Life and the Register's Office.
