Conduct

Parties & Noise:

Hosting noisy parties, or making excessive noise in the streets, in your home, or in your friends' homes can really cost you. A recent change in D.C. law regulating disorderly conduct, effective February 1, 2011, deems unreasonably loud noise as disorderly conduct, a criminal offense in D.C. The relevant law reads: "It is unlawful for a person to make an unreasonably loud noise between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. that is likely to annoy or disturb one or more other persons in their residences."

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will ARREST individuals whom they determine are violating this law.  The violation is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

Issues related to noise and loud parties are also addressed by the Office of Off Campus Student. If students are found to have violated the Code of Student Conduct, appropriate sanctions are issued.

Alcohol:

In accordance with D.C. law, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcohol.

It is illegal for anyone (regardless of age) to possess an open alcohol container in public spaces, e.g., sidewalks, streets, alleyways, parking lots. The Metropolitan Police Department actively enforces the open container rule in West Georgetown/Burleith.

MPD and the Alcoholic Beverage Commission rigorously enforce the alcohol laws and patrol local bars in an effort to curb underage drinking in establishments in the Georgetown area.
