Hydrothermal Worm Viewed Under An Electron Microscope (PHOTO)

This is not photoshop, no clever graphics, no movie scene... it's a hydrothermal worm.

And it's a real creature.

It's just really, really small. So small in fact, that this image comes from an electron microscope.

Taken using an FEI Quanta SEM, this image is amazingly zoomed in 525 times. The real width of the field in the image is 568μm, or 568/1000 of a millimeter. It's far larger than an atom, but still among the smallest living things.

The worm, as scary as it looks, is something most people will never actually get to see (or have to worry about, for that matter). Hydrothermal worms are deep sea creatures, almost as small as bacterium, and are largely found near hydrothermal vents in the ocean.

This shot was captured by Philippe Crassous and submitted to FEI's gallery. Other amazing shots taken using FEI's microscopes can be seen here.

Last month, scientists reported they had discovered the first multicellular life in the deep subsurface biosphere, or rather, "worms from hell." But perhaps the title is more fitting for this hydrothermal worm.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor!

Anyone ever seen that film "Tremors"? Thats amazing, the accuracy from almost 20 years ago, uncanny.

Whew! I dreamt about this creature last night -- canceled this afternoon's dive, too!

That's pretty cool.

This is the most terrifying worm I've ever seen at a microscopic level!

Maybe it feels love and pain and hope and joy and despair. Let's protect it forever.

No, it's obvious that everything humanity can and therefore must use and exploit into extinction every other species we encounter for whatever purposes we desire because we're so important. I mean, we are the center of the universe, right?
18 minutes ago (10:00 AM)
Nice try, but the reason that it is a good idea to protect organisms has nothing to do with its ability to feel emotion or pain, despite the misunderstanding of anti-environmentalists and fuzzy-wuzzy environmentalists (the kind who contribute every time they see a cute baby seal and so forth). Biodiversity plays a large role in maintaining the sustainability of our planet's biomass. Fewer species means fewer resources. When a single species is endangered, it can cause entire ecosystems to collapse. Your crass attempt to portray the need to maintain a healthy and sustainable planet as sentimentality shows a tremendous lack of depth and understanding on your part. I won't even go on to say what I think your obvious contempt for sentimentality says about you as a person. Res ipsa loquitur.

Good question, that is what I was thinking....
31 minutes ago (9:47 AM)
My question exactly. If it is among the smallest living things, what could the teeth be for?

They aren't for biting, just for aesthetics, they heard if you have good teeth you can get a hot date and move up the microbial ladder!!

This is only a black-and-white photo of the hydrothermal worm. I can't wait to see how scary it looks in color! Maybe we could have giant 100-foot-tall, mile-long hydrothermal worms like this as monsters in the movies now. But they would be in color in the movies, not just shades of gray.

Jeez what does such a small thing need all those teeth for. I always hoped for super powers when I was younger...x ray vision being one of them but after seeing that..I think I'll work with what I've got!!!
