Abstract: The online revolution brought about by the world wide web accompanied by other advancements in the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is having a deep impact on the publishing industry. Readers are enjoying the fruits in the form of online journals and databases. Though the development in the area of e-books is not so rapid, yet people have started realizing its potential as an efficient & effective tool for knowledge storage and dissemination. More and more publishers are now coming up with ebook solutions for academic institutions and libraries too have started to develop collection development policies for e-books. The production, dissemination and consumption of e-books will increase substantially when certain issues regarding universal standard and copyright are resolved and we are in a better position to handle the e-books. Libraries will also look forward to more affordable and useful subscription policy for acquiring electronic books. At present there are several formats for e-books, many softwares available for e-book reading. Like Open Access journals, there are many e-books projects which offer free online books for reading and downloading which have been discussed in the present paper. The paper also discusses the commercial e-book publishers and the advantages of ebook subscription for academic libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1432 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: ‘Electronic book’, a term coined by Van Dam of Brown University during the 1960s, is very popular today across the globe. The e-publishing phenomenon that began in the 1960s paved the way for the development of electronic versions of printed books which is known as e-Books. E-Book is nothing but a book in electronic form. We can download thousands of free e-Books from the Internet and nowadays, most of the world renowned Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) publishers provide perpetual access to the e-Books published by them under one time subscription basis. Abstract: Digital learning in developed countries provides the learners with an interactive mode in a successful way, but in the case of developing countries such as India access to computer is limited to a few elite urban areas. Erratic power interruption, unaffordable investment cost for a normal citizen and obsolete software are some of the bottlenecks preventing for popularization of the eEducation. Although India tops the global list of software experts including teaching, their expertise could not be optimally utilized for the spread of eEducation due to the above-mentioned shortcomings. eEducation is about bringing education to people instead of taking people to education. It includes delivery of subject courses and training via electronic media. This paper addresses the important aspects and merits of eEducation through distance mode at an affordable cost for developing countries such as India. Abstract: Emergence of electronic information has changed modes of communication, information demands of users and information management system in the libraries. Innovation in the field of information and communication technology is boosting research and development activities all around the world. Earlier libraries were facing various problems for managing print documents rescued by the electronic resources. The consortia initiatives are mushrooming in the world rapidly. UGC-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium launched by the University Grants Commission (UGC) through Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is considered one of the best consortium models in the globe. The consortium is subscribing thousands of fulltext electronic journals and databases and making them available online to 120+ universities of the country. A notable usage of electronic resources has been observed in the first three years of operation of the consortium. But millions of articles downloaded by the member universities are not being re-managed for further use. Through this paper an attempt is made to lay emphasis on an urgent need to manage downloaded scholarly e-contents with the help of various e-documents management software (OSS) keeping in mind the copyright limitations. Abstract: Internet is an enormous collection of resources. You can find information about several subjects. Thus some paper consider it as a huge library. But the difficult part is to start searching. Unlike libraries, there is no single catalogue in which you can identify or retrieve the item you are looking for. Evolution of tools to find and access graphically rich multimedia components as well as textual data thereby freeing from restrictions of FTP archives made Web more popular. These tools made it possible to find and access this richness. Finding the Web documents ( Web "pages" or "sites") you want can be easy or seem impossibly difficult. This is mainly because of the size of the WWW, currently estimated to contain 3 billion documents. It is also because the WWW is not indexed with any standard vocabulary. Unlike a library's catalogs, in which can use standardized subject headings to find books in most large, in Web searching you are always guessing what words will be in the pages you want to find or guessing what subject terms were chosen by someone to organize a web page or site covering a specific topic. Abstract: Since the advent of Unicode, electronic representation of regional language script is not as issue. However, transliteration is inevitable in a database designed to meet the needs of people who does not know that language. By transliteration, a unique name in one language or culture may have variant spelling in another language. The cataloguer maintainsname authority file to solve this problem. This article analyse the optionsfor retrieving transliterated Arabic names in major OPACs. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1546 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In the Academic and research libraries, the long-term preservation and management of digital collections is the most important issue. In certain ways, digital materials are incredibly fragile, dependent for their continued utility upon technologies that undergo rapid and continual change. Keeping and managing the e-journal resources accessible for use by future generations will require conscious effort and continual investment. No library is self sufficient to purchase all the books, Journals and other library documents with in their library budget. So customers belonging to different academic institutions or university may purchase e-journals and sharing its cost through consortia. This paper explains the terms and definitions of Electronic Journals (e-journals), followed by the aims and objectives of the e-journal purchase and management. Also the issues in archiving and preserving the back issues of the e-journals, the initiatives taken in archiving them and the role of e-journal agents in purchasing and managing them are discussed. The purchase and management of e-journals through Consortia and the various consortium efforts taken in India with special reference to INDEST consortia also have been explained in this paper. Abstract: Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” – American Literacy Association, Presidential committee on information Literacy final Report 1989. Online access to scholarly scientific content is growing, Electronic journals (e-journals), in particular is an increasing important resource for research and academic community and plays a significant role in scholarly communication. Library and information professionals and end-users will have to develop learning attitude and network related competencies to reap the benefits being made available to us by the information and communication technologies. The paper emphasizes the role of training and awareness programme, both for staff and users of the library for ensuring effective use of electronic journals.
