University NetID Services: Don't Know Your NetID Password?

If you have forgotten your NetID password, the Help Desk for your campus can create a new one for you by "resetting" it. When you request a password reset, the Help Desk changes your password to the capital letter "A" and the last six digits of your Social Security Number (or, if you don't have an SSN, your Georgetown-assigned ID number). The Help Desk cannot view your old password.

If you are new to the university and never had a password, you should follow these same steps to have your NetID password initialized.

A university or government-issued photo ID must be presented for all password reset requests. Staff cannot reset your password without positively verifying your identity with a photo ID.

You can reset your password by doing one of the following:

Request a Password Reset in Person

If you are on-campus, you can request a password reset in person by bringing your GOCard or government-issued photo ID to one of the following locations during business hours:

  • UIS Service Desk at G-39 St. Mary's Hall
  • University Registrar at G-01 White-Gravenor
  • Law Center Technology Reference Desk at 304 Williams Library

Request a Password Reset by E-mail

You can also e-mail your request with a scanned or digital picture of your photo ID and e-mail it as an attachment.

  1. Scan or take a digital picture of your university or government-issued photo ID.
  2. Attach the image file to an e-mail message with the following information and send to help@georgetown.edu
    • Your full name
    • Your NetID (if you know it)
    • A daytime phone number or non-Georgetown e-mail address where you can be reached once the password is reset
    • A note stating, "Please reset my NetID password"
    • Note: please do not include your Social Security number in this email.

E-mail requests are typically completed within one business day. You will be contacted at the phone number or e-mail address you indicated in your message when it has been completed.

You can also call the UIS Help Desk after sending your request to complete the reset more quickly over the phone. Call 202-687-4949 after sending your e-mail message.

Note: Your temporary password will expire 72 hours after the reset is complete. Be sure to request a reset at a time when you will have computer access for several days.

Request a Password Reset by Fax

If you cannot make it to one of the on-campus reset locations, you can send your request by fax accompanied by a photocopy of your photo ID.

  1. Print and fill out the password reset request form
  2. Make a legible photocopy of your university or government-issued photo ID. Note: Because faxes tend to darken in transmission, we recommend photocopying your ID on a very light setting. Some photocopiers have a "photo setting". If we cannot make out the printed text and the picture on the photocopy, we cannot complete your request.
  3. Fax both the form and the photocopy to the UIS Help Desk at 202-687-1162.

Fax requests are typically completed within one business day. You will be contacted at the phone number or email address you put on the form when it has been completed.

You can also call the UIS Help Desk after sending you request to complete the reset more quickly over the phone. Call 202-687-4949 after sending your fax.

Note: Your temporary password will expire 72 hours after the reset is complete. Be sure to request a reset at a time when you will have computer access for several days.

Request a Password Reset by Mail

You can also mail or ship your request with a photocopy of your photo ID.

  1. Print and fill out the password reset request form
  2. Make a legible photocopy of your university or government-issued photo ID. Note: We recommend photocopying your ID on a light setting. Some photocopiers have a "photo setting". If we cannot make out the printed text and the picture on the photocopy, we cannot complete the request.
  3. Send your request by U.S. Mail or commercial shipper to:

    UIS Help Desk
    St Mary's Hall G-36
    Georgetown University
    3800 Reservoir Road NW
    Washington DC 20057

Mailed requests are typically completed within one business day after the request is received at our office. You will be contacted at the phone number you indicated on the form when it has been completed.

How can I reset my password if I'm an alumnus or alumna?

If you are an alumnus or alumna with no other current Georgetown University affiliations, you can reset your NetID password by going to the hoyasonline Password Reset page. There, you can enter your NetID and answer your password hint question.

Please note that using your hint question will lower your access level to Alumni Association services only. You will be able to access the Alumni Directory and Career Network, but not other services like Student Access+ or the e-mail routing service.

If you have reset your password using a hint question, you can have your level of assurance raised by faxing, emailing or postal mailing a photo ID as above

  1. Print and fill out the Level of Assurance Increase request form

Information on the two levels of access (also refered to as Levels of Assurance) is available at the bottom of the NetID FAQs page.
