Graduates from the University of Bradford are more likely to get a good job than those from universities such as Oxford, Manchester and Imperial College London - figures in The Times Higher Education Supplement revealed today (Thursday 26 May 2005).
The University of Bradford has been ranked second out of 112 universities in the UK for graduate employment, after Cambridge University. This marks a further improvement on last year's ranking which showed Bradford to be seventh in the UK.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Taylor, said: "We place a high value on employability which is reflected in our mission statement of 'Making Knowledge Work' - and that's exactly what these national University league tables are showing.
"We have an excellent careers service, very good links with business and industry, and many of our courses lead to professional accreditation. I am delighted that we have moved up to number two in the UK."
The Times' Good University Guide 2006 distinguishes between those who are in 'graduate-type' jobs from those who are not. In other words, the figures only include students who are working in positions that require, or expect, degrees based on the average level of qualifications held by employees in those occupations.
The graduate category includes traditional occupations such as doctors, lawyers, engineers and teachers, as well as high-level managerial and technical jobs. Occupations that have come to be seen as graduate-level, such as high-level sales, skilled clerical and lower-level company management, are also included. The figures also include those students who go on to postgraduate study.
Head of the University's Career Development Service, Ron Harle, said: "I am thrilled that we have been ranked so highly in this table as career prospects play such a significant role in a students' choice of university today.
"A graduates' success reflects the work of academic tutors who develop relevant courses fit for purpose, the quality of professional support and guidance and, above all, the motivation and determination of our students.
"Our degree programmes are highly focussed on employment with around a quarter of our students on 'sandwich' courses and many others involved in placements, work related learning and having a general commitment to developing employability within themselves."
