Written Mostly for Clarification-of-My-Own-Thought Purposes

Brad DeLong
Professor of Economics
U.C. Berkeley

A (perhaps more complete) list of book reviews I have written can be found here.

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of William Easterly (2001), The Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists' Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics"; what a look back at the history of attempts to jump-start economic development tells us...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of H.N. Turteltaub (2001), Over the Wine-Dark Sea: A Sea Adventure of the Ancient World (New York: Forge: 0312876602)"; the focus of the book is not on the development of a character, or on some decisive event in an individual's or a civilization's history, but on the threads and character of daily life in the late fourth-century B.C. Mediterranean.

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed"; her blindness to what I see as the effect of government leads her into political naivete...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Richard Evans, Lying About Hitler"; in Evans's view a "holocaust denier" clearly loses his or her historian's license, but what about lesser offenses against wie es eigentlich gewesen?...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Alan Furst, Dark Star"; probably the best espionage novel I have ever read--and a very nice work of interwar history too...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Robert Skidelsky on John Maynard Keynes, vols. I and II"; the best biography I have read this decade...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Mark Mazower (1998), Dark Continent: Europe's Twentieth Century (New York: Knopf: 0679438092)." A good book to remind us just how lucky we are that twentieth century European history has had a happy ending...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Robert Skidelsky (2000), John Maynard Keynes: Fighting for Britain (London: Macmillan: 0333604563)."

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Rudiger Dornbusch (2000), Keys to Prosperity: Free Markets, Sound Money, and a Bit of Luck (Cambridge: MIT Press: 0262041812)." Forty-nine essays by Rudi Dornbusch. Well-written, well-argued, taking a definite point of view: Rudi Dornbusch is the antiparticle to the "on the one hand, on the other hand" economist.

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Michael Waldman (2000), POTUS Speaks: Finding the Words that Defined the Clinton Presidency (New York: Simon and Schuster: 0743200209)." One of the best "insider" books on the Clinton presidency I have read. Yet strangely it caused my hackles to rise. It's the natural opposition between economists and speechwriters...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Haynes Johnson and David Broder (1997), The System (Boston: Little Brown: 0317111457)." A couple of very good political journalists (but not policy analysts) recount the story of the death of health care reform in 1993-1994.

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Paul Krugman, The Accidental Theorist" The best collection of essays on economics and economic policy today by one of our finest Masters of Thought...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of David Brooks, Bobos in Paradise" Why Americans who will never go near a glacier wear $500 hiking boots...

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Robert Wright, Non Zero."

J. Bradford DeLong, "Review of Erik Tarloff's Face Time."
