Activists rally against new S Korea navy base
Protesters say proposed base on Jeju Island serves to help US contain China's growing military power.

Peace activists and locals are protesting against the South Korean government's plans to build a new naval base on an island off the country's south coast.

The protesters in Gangjeong, the village in which the base is slated to be built, say they are not willing to cede an inch of the village for the base, which they say serves to help the US contain China's growing military power.

The government says it will press on with the $90m project, as it will allow the military to swiftly respond to any future threats from North Korea.

Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Jeju Island.
