An undergraduate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures may select a minor in Chinese or Japanese, or a double major in both languages or any of various other double major or major-minor combinations across other disciplines in Georgetown College. Many East Asian languages and cultures majors choose minor concentrations in Asian studies, business, fine arts, history or linguistics.

The Division of Eastern Mediterranean Languages teaches Hebrew, Persian and Turkish.

The McGhee Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies was established in 1989, when George Crewes McGhee, a distinguished former ambassador to Turkey and Germany, donated his Mediterranean villa to Georgetown. It was Ambassador McGhee’s wish that the villa should become a center of scholarship and learning in the Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia and modern Turkey. Today the center continues to realize this vision by offering opportunities for overseas study, teaching and research as well as space for workshops, meetings, study tours and alumni events.

The Department of Economics offers bachelor’s degrees in economics and political economy as well as doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, including econometrics, economic development, economic theory, industrial organization, international economics, labor economics, macroeconomics, public economics and political economy, with major strengths in international economics and microeconomic theory. Students of all levels have opportunities to participate in economic research with faculty members.

The National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health recognizes that high-quality maternal and child health are vital to the health of the nation. The center was established at Georgetown in 1982 as a national resource to the maternal and child health education community. The center's multidisciplinary staff collaborates with a broad range of federal agencies, corporate and philanthropic partners, professional organizations and academic institutions.

All fourth-year students in the Department of Emergency Medicine participate in a four-week experience in emergency medicine, which includes certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and clinical emergency department experience at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center or Holy Cross Hospital. Under faculty supervision, students see a spectrum of undifferentiated and undiagnosed patients and participate in rapid assessment and treatment of a variety of problems, honing their skills in history taking, physical examination, problem solving and effective use of clinical resources.

Students in the English as a Foreign Language Program come from more than 30 countries to study in small classes designed to meet their diverse language backgrounds and learning styles. Classes focus on improving students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through an integrated course approach that develops students' fluency in the English language. Students are placed in one of six proficiency levels, from basic to advanced, based on their results on the English Language Placement Test given during program orientation.

The Department of English has one of the largest number of majors in the College. With its small classes, the department emphasizes close work with students and teaching excellence. Reflecting a broadening of the field in recent years, our department offers courses in canonical and non-canonical literature and film in English – whether in the Americas, Britain or developing countries. The department is home to the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice, the Shakespeare Association of America, the University Writing Program and the College’s undergraduate Journalism Program.

The main goal of the Center for the Environment (CFE) is to provide an evolving forum for the discussion, dissemination and awareness of environmental issues affecting all areas of scholarship, education and service at at the university. The CFE provides faculty and administrative resources for the environmental studies minor in the College and the environmental track of the Science, Technology, and International Affairs Major within the School of Foreign Service.

As the world’s oldest and most comprehensive academic bioethics center, the Kennedy Institute of Ethnics and its library serve as an unequalled resource for those who research and study ethics, as well as those who debate and make public policy. It is home to a group of scholars who engage in research, teaching and public service on issues that include protection of research subjects, reproductive and feminist bioethics, end of life care, health care justice, intellectual disability, cloning, gene therapy, eugenic, and other issues in bioethics.

The Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies directs one of the nation's preeminent master's degree programs and hosts a rich outreach program of events on the area from central Europe to the Pacific and the Baltic to the Mediterranean, as well as the Black and Caspian seas. A U.S. Department of Education Title VI funded National Resource Center, CERES provides a broad and deep understanding of Eurasian, Russian and East European affairs to audiences at Georgetown and throughout the Washington community.

The Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies (GEMS) Program is a one-year post-baccalaureate experience for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are most likely to make a significant contribution to meeting the needs of the nation’s minority, disadvantaged and under-served populations and whose disadvantaged circumstances have contributed to modest academic credentials.
