San Francisco shuts down cell network to hinder protests.

[ARTICLE] Only a few months after the beginning of the Arab Spring during which middle eastern government were heavily criticized for shutting down cell networks and internet services, the same thing has happened in America. BART shut down the subway cell network in San Francisco for a few hours to prevent a protest.

HOW TO BECOME A MARXIST: 23 – The International
speeches no one will ever hear

If the workers’ councils and a workers government based on workers councils seemed foreign to readers, then an International will seem even more peculiar. And yet, it shouldnt. First of all, there have been four Internationals so far in working class history, though the Fourth International has a more peculiar history than the first three. But only a bit more on that later. What is an International? For our purposes, it is a centralized, democratic party that encompases revolutionary parties from all over the world with the intention of helping coordinate social and revolutionary movements worldwide. That might sound a bit grandiose, but lets step back for a minute. For starters, there are already international organizations in place right now to coordinate certain international activity. The thing is that most of the current international organizations are intended to help manage the capitalist system in the interests of the capitalists. So there are international groups that he

Honorius Watching the Seventh Hill
The Graves of the Roses

“I wonder if the Emperor Honorius, watching the Visigoths coming over the seventh hill, truly realized that the Roman Empire was about to fall.” -Jean-Luc Picard Three years into the Lesser Depression, and where do we stand? Mired in a crisis of political economy and slowly sinking into the abyss. People are not rational, and arbitrary inequality is fundamentally destructive to any sense of community. This was proven in the Great Depression of the 1930s in such a way that it has never been equaled. Yet we have pursued virtually parallel policies since Reagan. As a result, history has repeated herself.  Because we failed to pay attention, we are now paying through our nose. The resulting instability around the world – the Indignados of Europe; the Arab Revolutions in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere; the riots in Britain – has been massively exacerbated by the failure of political solutions (which need not have failed) to our economic troubles (which need not have occur

When anyone shuts down the Internet they’re evil, except when we do it!
To Inform is to Influence

A recent report from the United Nations stated that not restricting internet services is a basic human right, it falls into the same category with freedom of expression. A quick rundown of bigger events in internet shutdowns around the world:  In July 2009, China cut internet access to stop protests. The protests failed. Iran cut the internet in December 2009, prior to planned student protests. The protests did not succeed in overthrowing the government. On December 17th, 2010, a street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire and kicked off a revolution in Tunisia. The revolution in Tunisia was enabled by social media, mainly Facebook, in light of a conventional media blackout.  The revolution succeeded. When Egypt cut access to the internet in January 2011, the world howled in protest. The revolution succeeded. In March 2011, Libya shut down internet access, however the uprisings continued and the country remains in a civil war. In August 2011, British Prime Minister David C

Romantic Love is a Myth. I Don’t Believe in it. Here is why…

Ladies…I would like some sound advice here.  Most know I worked in a prison. Most know I was a recluse during my teen years and well into my 20′s.  Had it not been for work,  a bunker would have been pure Heaven for me.  Relationships are not a strong point with me.  To me there is no such thing as romantic love.  I know what some of you are thinking, “You are so full of shit!”.  From your perspective, you are most likely correct.  I just don’t think I ever experienced it except MAYBE once and that was a mistake I won’t repeat any time soon.  However, my reality is not your reality.  Every real coin has two sides.  I simply do not need a relationship to validate who I am or what I am about. It just seems to me that both men and women tend to look for arrangements.  I’ve met a few men who really piss me off when they start dropping hints about wanting to know  how much money I have or make.  It’s not their business. I’m not looking t

Fact-checking the Bible
Carpe Scripturum

Now, the enslavement of the entire Egyptian population seems like the kind of thing that would be mentioned by historians. And, indeed, my study bible claims that “Egyptian sources testify that such a feudalistic system was introduced between 1700-1500 B.C.” So I decided to have a look through my library and see if I could find any mention of this. The first thing I found was that this period fell under Hyksos rule (Hyksos is a bastardized form of the Egyptian word: hekaw-khasut, which can be translated to mean “foreign kings”). It’s at least plausible that a major shift in rulers would coincide with a major shift in ruling system. But what I could find seems to suggest that this may not have been the case. Here’s what Nicolas Grimal has to say on page 186 of his A History of Ancient Egypt: The Hyksos introduced a method of government which was to prove equally successful for all the later invaders who applied it to Egypt: instead of attempting to im

The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.” Psalm 145:13b-14 Have you ever had a relationship with someone who was faithful? You knew you could depend on that person to do what he said. You learned that his word was completely trustworthy. If he said he would call you, he would. If he said he’d be somewhere at a certain time, he’d be there. In fact, if he was late, you began to wonder if he had an accident because it was so contrary to his nature. It’s great to have friends who are faithful. God is faithful. He is faithful to fulfill every promise in His Word. Sometimes we think God isn’t faithful because it appears He has not fulfilled a desire that we have. Sometimes we think He is not faithful because of a crisis event that seem
