8/8/2011 Jack Hillen, D Predators have signed Hillen to a one-year contract.

Analysis: He spent his first three professional seasons with the New York Islanders. The two-way contract is worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level. In 175 career games, the 25-year-old Hillen has 50 points (eight goals and 42 assists).
8/8/2011 Ryan Russell, C The Columbus Blue Jackets reached an agreement with Russell on a one-year, two-way NHL-American Hockey League deal.

Analysis: Russell was acquired in a trade from Montreal in exchange for right wing Mike Blunden on July 7. He had 10 goals and 11 assists in 65 games with Hamilton of the AHL last season.
8/8/2011 Dalton Smith, LW The Columbus Blue Jackets reached an agreement with Smith on a three-year entry level contract

Analysis: Smith was the team's second-round pick in 2010, taken 34th overall. He played with Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League last season. General manager Scott Howson posted on his Twitter account: ``Dalton was very good at development camp. Always at the top in terms of conditioning.''
8/7/2011 James Sheppard, C San Jose and Minnesota have made their third deal of the offseason, with center James Sheppard going to the Sharks on Sunday for a third-round draft pick in 2013.

Analysis: Sheppard was the ninth overall pick in the 2006 draft. He missed all of last season with a knee injury. He has 11 goals and 38 assists in 224 career games. Sheppard was a restricted free agent but has already a signed a contract with the Sharks. In June, San Jose sent Devin Setoguchi as part of a package to Minnesota for All-Star defenseman Brent Burns. Last month, the Sharks traded Dany Heatley to the Wild for Martin Havlat.
8/5/2011 Patrick O'Sullivan, C The Phoenix Coyotes have signed forward Patrick O'Sullivan to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed

Analysis: O'Sullivan played 31 games with Carolina and Minnesota last season, scoring two goals with six assists. The 26-year-old from Winston-Salem, N.C., has 56 goals and 101 assists in parts of six seasons with four teams. He had career highs of 22 goals and 31 assists with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007-08. O'Sullivan was drafted in the second round by Minnesota in 2003.
8/5/2011 Sean Avery, LW Avery has been arrested in California after police claim he shoved an officer at his Hollywood Hills home.

Analysis: Lt. Jorge Pardo tells City News Service that a neighbor's noise complaint sent police to the home at around 1 a.m. Friday. Pardo says Avery answered the front door, shoved an officer and slammed the door but cooperated when officers knocked a second time. The officer wasn't injured. The 31-year-old hockey player was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer. He remains jailed Friday morning on $20,000 bail.
8/4/2011 Connor Murphy, D Coyotes sign Connor Murphy to an entry-level contract.

Analysis: Murphy was selected 20th overall by the the Coyotes in June's NHL entry draft. He had three goals and three assists in 14 games with the U.S. national under-18 team. Connor Murphy also is the son of Gord Murphy, who played 14 seasons with Philadelphia, Boston, Florida and Atlanta from 1988-2002.
8/4/2011 Todd Fedoruk, LW The Vancouver Canucks have signed forwards Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk to tryout contracts. The team announced the deals on Thursday.

Analysis: Tampa Bay bought out Fedoruk's contract after the 2009-10 season. The 32-year-old enforcer did not play in the NHL last season. He has 97 points and 1,050 penalty minutes in 545 NHL games with six teams over nine seasons.
8/4/2011 Owen Nolan, RW The Vancouver Canucks have signed forwards Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk to tryout contracts. The team announced the deals on Thursday.

Analysis: The 39-year-old Nolan spent last season with Zurich of the Swiss League, where he scored seven goals and added 19 assists in 24 games. He played 1,200 career NHL games for seven teams, recording 885 points from 422 goals and 463 assists, plus 1,793 penalty minutes.
8/3/2011 Shea Weber, D An arbitrator has awarded Weber $7.5 million for the upcoming season. The Predators chose to take the Norris Trophy finalist and team captain to arbitration, and the arbitrator heard arguments Tuesday in a hearing in Toronto. The Predators argued that Weber was due $4.75 million, while Weber's agents countered with $8.5 million.

Analysis: Weber will be a restricted free agent after the 2011-12 season. He had 48 points in 82 games last season in helping Nashville reach the Western Conference semifinals for the first time.
8/3/2011 Colin White, D San Jose Sharks has signed White in another offseason move to bolster their blue line. The 33-year-old White signed his deal on Wednesday, a day after being waived by the New Jersey Devils.

Analysis: White has scored just 20 goals in 743 career games, but he adds another physical player who is strong on the penalty kill. The Sharks ranked 24th in the league on the penalty kill last season.
8/3/2011 Patrick Sharp, C The Chicago Blackhawks and forward Patrick Sharp have agreed to five-year contract extension.

Analysis: The 29-year-old Sharp tied for eighth in the league with a team-leading 34 goals and was third on the club with a career-high 71 points. He added three goals and two assists in the playoffs as the Blackhawks lost to Vancouver in the first round following a championship run the previous year.
8/2/2011 Ryan Kesler, C Kesler has had hip surgery, the team said on Tuesday, and is expected to make a full recovery in 10 to 12 weeks.

Analysis: The Selke Trophy winner had a career-high 41 goals and added 32 assists in 82 games with the Canucks, who lost to the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals. In 25 playoff games, he added seven goals and 12 assists. Kesler needed the operation to repair his labrum, which is a type of cartilage that surrounds the socket of ball-and-socket joints. It helps to provide stability to the joint while allowing flexibility and motion.

Analysis: Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said he talked to Hunter about a possible second transaction after the Devils acquired him from the New York Islanders for Brian Rolston last week.

8/1/2011 Brent Burns, D San Jose signed Burns to a five-year extension Monday. Burns had one year left on his contract and general manager Doug Wilson said at the time he acquired Burns in a draft-day trade for Devin Setoguchi he would like to lock up the 26-year-old long term.

Analysis: Burns played 80 games last season, posting 17 goals and 29 assists. He also scored eight power-play goals and has the big shot the Sharks were seeking.
7/29/2011 Zach Parise, LW The New Jersey Devils have reached an agreement with high-scoring left wing Zach Parise on a one-year-contract. In making the announcement late Friday afternoon, Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said the two sides were continuing to work on a multiyear deal.

Analysis: The Devils had filed for arbitration with Parise in June. He would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2012 had he not reached a new deal. Parise earned $5 million last season, a year in which he was limited to 13 games and three goals by a knee injury that required surgery. He had been the catalyst of the Devils' offense the previous four seasons, scoring 146 goals.
7/28/2011 Duncan Siemens, D Avalanche ink first-rounder Siemens

Analysis: The Avalanche signed Duncan Siemens, their second first-round pick, to a three-year contract Thursday. Picked 11th overall, Siemens had five goals and 38 assists with 121 penalty minutes in 72 games with Saskatoon of the Western Hockey League last season. He's expected to take part in the Avs' training camp this fall.
7/28/2011 Gabriel Landeskog, LW Avalanche sign second overall pick Landeskog

Analysis: The Avalanche on Thursday signed Gabriel Landeskog, the second overall selection in June's draft to a three-year contract. The 18-year-old forward led Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League with 36 goals despite being limited by an ankle injury to 53 games. He's expected to take part in the Avalanche's training camp this fall.
7/28/2011 Trent Hunter, RW New Jersey acquired Hunter from the New York Islanders on Thursday for Brian Rolston and a 2012 draft pick.

Analysis: The 31-year-old Hunter was limited to 17 games last season because of a torn knee ligament. He had one goal and four points. He spent the last nine seasons with the Islanders, and has career totals of 99 goals and 130 assists.
