Formula 1: Vettel Fights Back to Get Pole Position for Hungarian GP

Sebastian Vettel celebrates qualifiying in pole position for Hungarian GP

Red Bull's racing driver and current world chanpion Sebastian Vettel put his team back in business in Hungary on Saturday as he beat McLaren's Lewis Hamilton to pole position in the official qualifiers by just a tenth of a second, with Jenson Button third in the second MP4-25 for Sunday's Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Felipe Massa out-qualified Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso to take fourth, with Mark Webber qualifying sixth to start in the third row Sunday at the Hungaroring alongside Ferrari's Spanish driver.

Sebastian Vettel found some qualifying inspiration in the last few secnds of the qualifying to fend off a fierce challenge from Lewis Hamilton to maintain Red Bull’s 100% pole record this season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The momentum from Hamilton’s brilliant victory at the Nurburgring six days ago seemed set to continue unchecked after his first Q3 time proved a mere 0.067s faster than championship leader Vettel’s and the McLaren man was then marginally up on the German again in the first sector of their respective final runs.

But Vettel’s middle sector proved the difference and he claimed his eighth pole of the year by 0.163s on a 1m19.815s as Hamilton, who appeared to run marginally wide in the final corner, was consigned to second on the grid for the second successive weekend although he is still very much well positioned for the race.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso had been third after the first runs but by the end of Q3 had been shuffled down to sixth, while Jenson Button produced his best qualifying performance for a while to make it a McLaren two-three.

And then at the last, and at the 11th attempt this season, Felipe Massa finally outqualfieid Alonso as he uncorked a final lap all of 0.015s faster to seize fourth, with Alonso resigned to share third row with Mark Webber, who had started the previous two races from pole. The Australian was strangely subdued and trailed Red Bull team-mate Vettel by a 0.6s margin.

German Nico Rosberg was again best of the rest in the lead Mercedes, comfortably winning a intra-nation duel between Adrian Sutil (eighth), again going well in the Force India, and team-mate Michael Schumacher (ninth).

Sergio Perez impressively hustled his Sauber into the top 10 shootout but then didn’t set a lap time, appearing to save a set of super-soft tyres for the race.

Paul di Resta missed out on a Q3 berth by just a tenth of a second to Perez, but 11th still represents yet another strong qualifying result for the rookie who will now hope to turn his recent run of back luck in races around and score points on Sunday.
