Personalizing Google News

Google News aims to surface the most relevant, useful news for you. We customize your news based on the following factors:

Manual preferences

You can manually control many elements of Google News. The central place for your customization settings can be found in the Personalize box, which you can control by clicking the "Personalize" button in the top-right of the screen:

  • Re-order sections by dragging and dropping them with your mouse.
  • Adjust how much you prefer to see news from a given section by adjusting the slider toward the plus sign (+), or the minus sign (-).
  • Delete a section by clicking its trash can icon.
  • Create a personalized section by typing a search term (such as "Environment") in the text box and clicking "Add." You can also click “Advanced»” to access the custom section directory.
  • If you are signed into your Google Account, you can also adjust sources. To adjust a source, type its name into the text box, click “Add,” and drag the slider to your desired setting.
  • To reset all manual personalization preferences, including Advanced Settings, click “Reset.”

When you are finished adjusting your settings, click "Save."

To hide the side column, click the ">>" arrows located in the "Top Stories" bar. You can always bring the side column back by clicking the arrows again.

Our Help Center also has specific suggestions on specifying your preferred language and country for Google News.

Advanced Settings

Google News provides some advanced settings. Click the gear icon at the top-right of the screen and click “News Settings,” which will take you to the News Settings page.

  • Select how much content you want to see from Blogs and Press Releases.
  • View your sections in one or two columns.
  • Toggle whether clicking on an article opens it in a new browser window or the current window.
  • Toggle whether Google News should reload itself automatically every fifteen minutes.

Location

Google News has a local news section for you based on your location. You can see this section in a box in the side column.

You can change your location in Google News by following these steps:

  • Click on "Edit."
  • Enter a new location.
  • Click "Save Changes."

Web History

If you are signed into your Google Account and have Web History enabled, your News experience is automatically customized to show you the most relevant and interesting articles for you, based on what you've previously clicked on. Learn about using Web History.

Turning Off Personalization

If you don’t want to see personalized news, you can:

  • Click on the “Standard U.S. Edition” link at the bottom of Google News. This will not delete any of your News settings or Web History. It will switch you to a non-personalized version of Google News for the duration of your current session. (To switch back, click on “Personalized U.S. Edition”.)
  • Turn off web history personalization by signing out of your Google Account or deleting your web history (Google News may take some time to update).
  • Turn off manual preferences by resetting them.
