FORT BRAGG, Calif. - A well-respected California community leader who was gunned down after finding a remote illegal marijuana operation was a two-term mayor whose fundraising and goodwill helped build firehouses and a first-class high school football stadium.

The city of Fort Bragg was reeling Monday after the death of longtime Councilman Jere Melo, a forest land manager who was fatally shot Saturday while he and a co-worker were walking through a rugged area of timber land just outside town.

A manhunt continued for the suspected gunman.

Melo was in his 15th year on the City Council and had dedicated most of his life improving Fort Bragg.

"He was always the first one there, and the last one to go," current Mayor Dave Turner told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "No one put in as much as Jere did, and I don't think they ever will."

City Manager Linda Ruffing told the newspaper, "Jere was just loved and respected by so many people."

Fort Bragg officials met on Sunday to discuss how to handle the grief among city staff.

Melo, who spent five decades in the timber business, was most recently working for Campbell Timber Management in Fort Bragg.

On Saturday, he and a co-worker were patrolling forestland for a suspected marijuana grow along the Noyo River when he was shot and killed, authorities said.

Melo's co-worker managed to escape and called for help on his cell phone.

Deputies suspect the gunman was Aaron Bassler, a transient in his mid-30s with a history of run-ins with the law, Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman said.

Bassler was last seen with a firearm and should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.

This all started because of a corrupt bureaucrat wanted funding for his department, so they picked on marijuana as a level one drug with no real research to classify it as such.
Mayor LaGuardia was tasked with finding out weather marijauna was a so called gateway drug to other more lethal drugs...
His findings were that they didn't. This didn't deter the new department and went along and classified it inaprropriately.
Furthermore, this issue can be settled as easily as a snap.
The law exists that allows a person to purchase the marijuana stamp from the government allowing users to posess for use.
The law is a ploy to capture pot smokers, but it can easily not be used as such and simply issue the stamps.

How evil must a person be to imprison innocents and ruin millions of lives in order to finance his purposeless government job?

Prohibition should not be tolerated.

America failed to learn the lessons of alcohol prohibition.

Lesson #1: Human appetites cannot be legislated.
Lesson #2: Prohibition promotes graft, corruption and violence.
Lesson #3: The War On Drugs benefits only drug cartels and corrupt bureaucrats.
Lesson #4: The War On Drugs ruins more lives than the drugs from which the bureaucrats claim to protect us.
Lesson #5: Prohibition does not work.

END THE FAILED, FOOLISH WAR ON DRUGS! LEGALIZE.

It is a shame that the war on drugs has become it's own industry. One industry relying on another to keep both going. If the DEA, ICE, FDA, etc were just departments in commercial business then they would have been shut down years ago as ineffective and costly failures, but since the tax dollars are free let continue to fund them anyway. Keeping the bureaucracy going becomes the goal at any cost.

This article is like a bad press release. Why does a city councilman go patrolling the forestland? Was this stunt to get press that back fired? Seems like thee is more to this unfortunate story then what was in the press release.

The story says that they were looking for a pot farm, does not say they found it. The person they are looking for is a transient but doesn't say he is the pot farmer. It looks like the writer jumped to the conclusion that the Transient was the pot farmer.?. He could have been part of the grow operation but he could have just been there too!!

Sorry for the families loss and I hope they find the killer soon!!

Too many people are dying because of the illegal drug trade. The huge amounts of money for drug traffickers would not exist if their was a regulated method of distributing drugs. The War Against Drugs is America's longest running war, not Afghanistan. Sadly and badly, the people that dying by the hundreds live south of the border and they are killing themselves with American firearms. When is this insanity going to stop? A former Mexican President, has once again called for the legalization of pot and other drugs in Mexico. After the massacre in the casino in Monterrey over the weekend, the Mexican people are beginning to think he is correct. The pot smokers lay back enjoying their peaceful puffs, while Mexican blood is running in the streets. All of this bolstering of the definition of the word 'idiot' must and has to stop.
