Congratulations, Joanne, for claiming your $20 gift certificate!

Left Neglected Left Neglected
by Lisa Genova
Joanne's Comments
"I have a friend who has had a brain injury, and was very curious about this book. It is an eye opener from beginning to end. What a picture of the driven life of so many folks in our culture! And what a change that comes with serious injury, and very very hard work to recover! I appreciated the depth of introspection in the face of grievous loss, and thoroughness of description of the recovery process. Still Alice was awesome. I love this one, too." (read more)

The Peyton-Allan Files
The Peyton-Allan Files
by Phil Stanford

Ernie's Comments:
"Phil Stanford has a natural talent for writing and investigating. For those who remember, he was the "Steve Duin" of the 80's at the Oregonian, and did a dam good job! This book, The Peyton Allan Files, leaves you on the edge of your seat, as you read. It's the kind of book that you can't put down. Phil is one of the most "Tenacious" people I think I know. Maybe he's a writer, who should have been a cop (detective). I'm familiar with his other works, and he probably knows more than anyone else anywhere on anything he does." (read more)

Kraken
Kraken
by China Mieville

Vincent's Comments:
"It's time to get your squid on! The sheer force of Mieville's imagination is enough to propel this eschatological shaggy dog story of fringe beliefs, city streets and brine. Sure, the characterizations are a little haphazard but every turn of the page brings a new wonder including a sentient ocean taking up residence in a London flat and heroic, poignant patchwork angels that watch over the legacies of museums both relevant and anachronistic. And, at least in this book, it seems that Mieville has finally found the balance between the lyrical and the merely verbose. So jump in, the water's fine, and enjoy this search for a missing giant squid. Finding it may just be the key to saving the world from inky Armageddon. A good bet for fans of Jeff Vandermeer." Dracula in Love
Dracula in Love
by Karen Essex

Baochi's Comments:
"I have been a longtime fan of Karen Essex and have read all of her books....Essex blew me away with Dracula in Love -- this novel is unique in its own right, imaginative, and utterly engrossing....I love it when a favorite author continues to write exciting, high quality work. Essex is like a reliable friend who never disappoints and always opens my mind to new worlds. I recommend all of her novels and am wondering if indeed Dracula in Love is my favorite...hard to say considering all her novels are so dang good!" (read more)

The Lonely Polygamist
by Brady Udall

Annie's Comments:
"Loved this book from the moment I started it. Poor Golden, trying so hard to keep everyone happy....I loved all the kids, especially Rusty, who just wanted to have a steak party for his 12th birthday and not have to share it with his father....A great story about a father of 20+ kids who is trying to keep his head above ground...An interesting and amusing look into the world of modern day polygamy with twists all along the way and a bittersweet ending that will have you cheering for this family. A must read in my book!!" (read more)

Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager
Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager
by Langdon Cook

Wendy's Comments:
"After following Langdon Cook's blog for some time, I loved reading this book. It's a wonderful introduction to the complexity of foraging in Washington state, and a perfect introduction for me, a transplant to this new environment. I enjoyed the author's sense of humor, open mind, and ability to share his insights about food, ecosystems, and people. Now when I notice dandelions growing by the road, or slurp a fresh oyster at the local restaurant, I remember his adventures, and appreciate that he produced this collection. Each chapter includes a recipe at the end, and they all look good....I recommend this book to anyone in the Pacific Northwest who would like to understand more about the land and food here." Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness
Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness
by Alexandra Fuller

Nina's Comments:
"Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness by Alexandra Fuller is a return to Fuller's childhood upbringing in East Africa....Fuller's storytelling effortlessly flows from the contemporary setting of her parent's fish farm in Zambia to the remote cool wet weather of Skye (Scotland) or bleak post-war England. She gives life to her characters through each person's own unique voice. Fuller shows the reader that her heritage is both stubborn and free-spirited. And she answers the question of why her parents never left Africa." (read more)
