More at Powell'sShopping Bag RevolutionThere has been a great deal of publicity of late regarding disposable shopping bags. So, we're happy to introduce a low-cost reusable tote bag to help lessen our impact on the environment. These $.99 bags are available for sale at all of our store locations and on Powells.com.Plus, as a company we've decided to switch our large paper bags to those containing 100% recycled material. We are also in the process of updating our bag selection to incorporate other sizes of recycled-paper bags. Because rain and books don't like each other much, we will continue to offer plastic bags. But, did you know that plastic bags can take as long as 1,000 years to biodegrade? And, according to the EPA, over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks, and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year with only 1-3% being recycled. So, we highly encourage our customers to recycle those plastic bags! |
Welcome to Powell's Books green page, a place to share our efforts as an environmentally conscious business and exchange ideas with our community. Over the past few years, we have incorporated green practices into our business when possible. Our Green Committee studies the impact of Powell's Books, Inc., on the environment and identifies opportunities for implementing additional sustainable practices with the goal of minimizing that impact. Powells.com is proud to partner with Green Press Initiative, a nonprofit program that is working with publishers, paper mills, and printers to make positive transformations within the book industry. Green Press and Powells.com will feature titles from publishers that have committed to eliminating their use of endangered forest fiber and instead to use paper that is recycled and/or certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
