Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe - An ERC Project

mde_homepageWelcome to Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe (MDCEE), an interdisciplinary research project launched in October 2009 and funded by the European Research Council.

Our project aims to investigate the often troublesome and poorly understood relationship between democracy and the media in Central and Eastern Europe, but our findings should be more broadly applicable to consolidating democracies worldwide.

We take a novel approach, focusing on the quality of the media as a function of the quality of democracy and ask:

What kind of democracy is necessary for the media to perform its statutory functions?
