Filing an Actos lawsuit? 2011 has been a year of revelations.
Though it has not been the Year of the Actos Lawsuit, 2011 has been a year of Actos revelations, brought about by studies conducted over the past decade. Actos experienced a large boost in sales in 2010 when an FDA panel ruled that fellow thiazolidinedione (a type of diabetes drug meant to fight insulin resistance) Avandia should either be withdrawn or restricted due to the risk of bone fractures and heart problems.
Actos was found to contain bone fracture and heart attack and stroke risks in the same studies that found these risks in Avandia. In a study published in the October 2010 edition of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers found that older women and men taking a certain combination of diabetic drugs faced increased risks of bone fracture. Actos and Avandia were both found to increase the risk of bone fracture in this study.
Another study in late 2010 found cardiovascular risks increased with Actos usage. In a study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, researchers found that “when they accounted for potential confounding effects, including age, gender and prior heart disease, about 4% of each group [of Avandia and Actos patients had a heart attack, heart failure or died.” (1)
