Heavy rain affected southwest England and eastern Scotland at dawn, with patches of mist and fog elsewhere. For Northern Ireland, most of Wales and most of Scotland, it was a bright afternoon, with some sunshine.

It was the coolest August since 1993 across Scotland and Northern Ireland, but similar to August 2010 across England and Wales. There was over twice the average amount of rainfall in the eastern half of Scotland and in north-east England.

2010 was the coldest year since 1986, and also ranked as one of the sunniest and driest.
