BIG GT: This concept rendering shows off a contemporary interpretation of the Interceptor’s classic lines.

One of the most iconic of British sports car brands is making a comeback.

Thanks to an agreement between Healey Sports Cars Switzerland (which owns the Jensen name) and low-volume coachbuilder Coventry Prototype Panels a new Interceptor is being promised within three years.

The original Interceptor, produced from 1966-76, was a proper touring GT (available as a convertible and hatchback) powered by carburettor-fed Chrysler V8s ranging in capacity from 6.2  to 7.2 litres.

Its combination of American V8 power and Italian styling (by Carrozzeria Touring) made the Interceptor a favoured collector’s item for fans of classic British sports cars.

With Healy Sports Cars allowing brand name out to play again and CPP’s considerable skills (it owns Bowler, is currently bidding on Spyker, has a joint venture with Zagato, and produces prototypes for Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls-Royce), expectations are high.

BRINGING BACK THE BIG, BRITISH GT

CPP says it hopes to display a concept car by the end of 2012 and to deliver the first units in 2014. Production is expected to commence at Jaguar’s former HQ in Browns Lane, Coventry recently acquired by CPP.

Brendan O'Toole, founder and co-owner of CPP, is understandably upbeat. "The Jensen design team has respected and honoured the great heritage and attributes of the original Interceptor but will inject a contemporary edge and advanced technologies that will ensure it appeals to the passionate, discerning motoring enthusiast of today."

Although technical details are non-existent, the new Interceptor’s proportions and configuration are expected to copy the original.

Sourcing an appropriate large Chrysler V8  is seen as crucial as most enthusiasts will dismiss lout-of-hand any Interceptor without a Hemi V8. Hopes are that CPP will be able to negotiate for a small consignment of Chrysler’s latest SRT8 6.4-litre V8 that's good for 342kW...
