Can Germany ween itself from nuclear power? In the aftermath of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant disaster, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Germany would shut down all 17 of its nuclear reactors by 2022.  We discuss the implications of this dramatic decision for Europe and the United States.

Carol Castiel, Host of Encounter

As Director of Current Affairs Programming in VOA’s English Division, Carol Castiel is responsible for producing Press Conference USA, Encounter, and Issues in the News.  Carol moderates and produces Press Conference USA and Encounter. She also oversees the production of Issues in the News, VOA’s roundup of the week’s top stories by distinguished Washington journalists.

Prior to becoming Director of Current Affairs Programming, Carol wrote, edited, and produced the former documentary program, Dateline. She also anchored live newscasts for VOA News Now and worked in VOA's Africa Division.

Before joining the Voice of America, Carol was a consultant/free-lance journalist specializing in the promotion of trade and investment between the United States and Africa. She was also a contributing editor to the London-based West Africa Magazine and managed scholarship programs for Portuguese-speaking Africa at the Africa-America Institute from 1984 to 1992. Carol has traveled widely in Africa, Europe and South America and is fluent in Portuguese, French, and Spanish.  She holds an M.A. degree in International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. Carol is especially fascinated and inspired in her professional and personal life by the history and culture of medieval Spain known in Arabic as “Al-Andalus.”
