Since the new Fiesta debuted back in 2008, hot hatch aficionados have been patiently waiting for a new ST.
Although Ford’s poured a generous amount of resources into refining and developing the bigger Focus ST hot hatch, the smaller Fiesta has seemingly been neglected.
Well, that’s all about to (hopefully) end…
MINI-ME ST
As the American auto giant revealed its new Focus ST (in both hatchback and wagon configuration) at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show, it also pulled the tarpaulin off a concept Fiesta ST.
Ford says the company’s Fiesta WRC car serves as design inspiration, although the oversized trapezoidal mesh grille borrows heavily from the new Focus ST. Around the rear there’s a dual-exit exhaust (jutting from under the starboard side of ST), with mesh detailing in a cut-out section of the diffuser framed bumper.
Technically the ST's 1.6-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is good for 135kW and 240Nm, with a six-speed manual transmission transferring power to the front wheels. Ford says if you’re skilful with a manual-transmission, it’s good for the benchmark 0-100km/h in only 7 sec…
When is it coming?
Well, Ford says it’s seriously considering production, but there are no guarantees as yet. With the company having spent handsomely on its Fiesta WRC programme, not having a road-car model would make no sense.
Subsequently, we live in hope, as this second-generation Fiesta ST will continue the heritage of other quick, compact Ford hatchbacks such as the XR2, XR2i, RS1800, RS Turbo and the previous-generation ST.
The latest from the Frankfurt show.
