Washington - Muammar Gaddafi will pose a "danger" for Libya's new leadership as long as he and his family remain at large, according to the US ambassador to the North African country.

"Having them continue to be free anywhere in Libya or outside of Libya poses a danger to whatever efforts the [National Transitional Council] is going to make in terms of establishing a government," Gene Cretz said on Wednesday.

The envoy, speaking at an event in Washington, said it was "very important" for the NTC to put Gaddafi on trial, now that it had toppled the strongman and largely defeated his forces.

Cretz, who recently returned from the Paris conference on Libya held last week, said the Nato mission - which pummelled loyalist targets from the air during the uprising - would continue.

"[In Paris], there was a sense that it is not over... especially with Gaddafi and his sons around the country," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday Libya's NTC - the de facto government established by rebels in the early days of the uprising - sought Niger's help in keeping Gaddafi, his family and troops from leaving the country.

A large convoy of civilian and military vehicles entered Niger from Libya late on Monday carrying Gaddafi’s former security chief, but the defeated leader was not believed to have been among them.

Niger has insisted Gaddafi is not in the country, and Gaddafi himself slammed reports of his departure as "psychological warfare and lies" in an audio message aired by the Damascus-based Arrai television channel.
