TV Presenter Apologizes To Afghan Warlords -- At Gunpoint

Afghan-American TV presenter Nabil Miskinyar

Afghan-American TV presenter Nabil Miskinyar

By RFE/RL
KABUL -- Nabil Miskinyar, a 60-something journalist, has numerous television appearances under his belt. But none like the one he experienced in Afghanistan last week.

The Afghan-American journalist regularly appears on his California-based Ariana Afghanistan Television and comments on the war-torn country's current affairs and political past.

His hard-hitting monologues -- presented in Dari and often directed at some of the most powerful political figures in Afghanistan today -- attract a modest audience both among the Afghan diaspora and inside the country itself.

During a recent trip to Kabul, it was made clear that Miskinyar's approach has its detractors as well.

Miskinyar claims that on September 12 he was picked up for lunch by four men, including Najibullah Kabuli, owner of the private Emrooz Television channel. The two had set up the appointment through a common friend who had proposed cooperation between their fledgling stations.

Miskinyar says that after a lavish lunch, he was forced at gunpoint to conduct an interview with Emrooz telejournalist Fahim Kohdamani.

"He told me that 'on your television shows, you always criticize and say bad things about the leaders of the national resistance,'" Miskinyar says, ticking down a list of the so-called mujahedin who battled Afghanistan's former Soviet occupiers. "By this, he meant Burhanuddin Rabbani, Ahmad Shah Masud, Abdul Rad Rasul Sayyaf, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Ahmed Zia Massud, Ahmad Wali Masud, and Mohammad Qasim Fahim. What I said in the interview was that 'if I did not say the right things, or if I have attributed false things to these leaders of the resistance, then I apologize to the Afghan people.'"

Scare Tactics

In a press statement on September 16, Miskinyar claims that he was asked to confess that that he was an American agent, a supporter of Pakistan, and anti-Iranian.

He says he had two guns pointed at him at all times.

"Kohdamani told me that I would die and my entire family would be killed if I did not respond as they demanded," Miskinyar writes. "Under intense pressure and in fear of my life, I told them what they wanted me to say while they videotaped an 'interview.'"

Miskinyar says that he was held for seven hours after the interview and was then blindfolded and left on a Kabul street. "Fortunately, I was able to find my way back to my family and leave the country," his statement says.

Allegation Rejected

In the interview, Maskinyar is shown being aggressively questioned about his political views and the opinions expressed during his television shows.

Najibullah Kabuli, the owner of Emrooz television, rejects Miskinyar's allegations. He counters that he himself is a fierce critic of Iran's clerical regime, so it would make no sense for him to force Miskinyar to say good things about the Iranian government.

"I think he arrived here to get money from the leaders that he used to insult [on his TV shows]," Kabuli says. "He thought that he would show to them that he will keep silent in future in return for their payments. And that's why he chose my television for a confessional interview. But afterward he saw that the leaders were not impressed and didn't give him any money. So he accused me to get something or to get fame. I think this speaks about his motives."

Najibullah is known as a crook in Kabul and his TV was banned at one point .. He is an ethnic Tajik - Miskinyar is Mohammadzia and Pashtun bloodline .. You do the math ..

quote from this article -> http://www.kw.af/english/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=360:ecc-drops-several-nominees-from-the-race .... "The fate of two other candidates, Mullah Tarakhel Mohammadi and Najibullah Kabuli, is unknown. Both candidates, who are from Kabul, were recently accused of commiting crimes."

Mr. Miskinyar's interview with Emroz TV seems to have been conducted at his free will and there is no shred of evidence to suggest he was forced at gunpoint.

Najibullah Kabuli and Miskinyar have a number of commonalties i.e. past Moaist background and anti-Iran stances. That's why he willingly appeared on Emroz to make up for past offensive comments against people such as revered commander Ahmad Shah Massoud to prove his anti-Taliban stance.

The reason he retracted his comments is that he did not expect Emroz TV to post his interveiw on facebook. He tought Emroz was a local TV and the people outside Afghanistan won't be able to watch his interveiw.

Had he been truely kidnapped, why did he not report to the police, the UN office, the US embassy as he is a US citizen? Or why did he not appear on Afghanistan's media about this?

Miskinyar should be brave enough to admit that he voluntariliy gave the interview and there was no force at work. He needs to adhere to journalistic code of conduct and avoid playing to different gallaries in different times.

Really? Did you watch the show last night and Mr. Miskinyar discuss the exact timeline and details? Well you should have because there is no way it was a lie .. I am a criminal justice major and know profiling pretty well .. If you watch the video with Fahim Kohdamani Mr. Miskinyar is pushing away from him that is a sign of fear and distrust .. Mr. Miskinyar did not stutter nor look either way while telling his story on Ariana Television last night . There were details in his story that are hard to lie about ...

Mr. Kohdamani and Kabuli you will be interrogated and the state dept and or some sort of officials will be knocking on your door shortly as I heard that the U.S officials have been notified. Good Luck!

You know the only reason you didn't hurt him is because of the call from Karzai's brother on his cell phone and the list of names you saw that had called him when he was at your studio? They took his phone and went through it ... There is also the fact that Kabuli realized numerous people knew that Mr. Miskinyar was with Kabuli. If they would have harmed him all would know.

Kabul and Kohdamani are nobody's .. Mr. Miskinyar will go to Afghanistan and fight for what is right ..

I watched Miskinyar's talks with Amiri on Ariana-Afghanistan TV tonight. He evaded a major question on everyones' mind.

He did not say a word why he did not contact the US embassy, the UN office, Human Rights office or dozens of television stations in Kabul, if he was tells the truth? Therefore, it seems that the entire story is a fabrication.

Mr. Miskinyar is trying to win fame and audience inside and outside the country thats why he made all this up its worth mentioning that Mr. Meskinyar is is in USA since 32 years and he is talking about political situation from his own goggles not based on ground realities.
Mr. Miskinyar is a sort of racist who is trying to impose the thoughts and the son of former corrupt king Zahir shah's also he is trying to demoralize the democratic system in the war torn country.
In the mean time Mr. Meskinyar is one of the founders of a political party which is almost in contradiction with the job of a journalist, because a journalist should not take sides.
thank you

Any one with common sense can tell from the interview that it was conducted by force. the guy is sweating and he is setting cross legs. those can understand the signs of body languages can easily tell that it is by force. the guy is leaning back from kodamani to protect himself. Anyway, if the case is registered with the state department then as a US citizen, Mr Miskinyar will get support and Mr Kabuli and Mr Kodamani will be brought to justice. they could possibly get fine up to million dollars each for damaging miskinyar's image and could get jail upto 3 years for kidnapiing Mr Miskinyar for over 7 hours. They could also be barred forever to enter USA.
Mr Kabuli's and Mr Kudamani's supporters no need to worry about it. the US government is taking care of this issue and the two criminal will face serious consequences soon. Mr Miskinyar is doing right thing of not saying much to media apart from being kidnapped as this could underscore him. Lets the court decide the case first then he can go in media with full story and interviews.

it is hurting every Afghan that they are living abroad to see what a sad welcome from the criminals and Mafia in Kabul.

I am afraid I have to say that I find it a big hard to believe what Mr Miskinyar would say & claim. This is based on the impression he would left behind to an objective mind with consistent deficiency in objectivity, professional conduct & mannerism as well a severe lack of sophistication. Added more to above he has not even for once every time I watched his TV not criticised at least one of three major terrorist gangs namely Taliban, Hizbi Islami & Haqqani network despite their obvious acts of war crime. Yet not once he failed to stop the demonising campaign against the Anti-Taliban national resistance leaders. Anyone with little objective inside knowledge of Afghanistan would know Mr Miskinyar's ethnic agenda.

I think it's pretty clear from the tone of the interview that Nabil Miskinyar was coerced into employing the answers he gave all the way through. Both the US and Afghan governments must take this issue seriously and the kidnappers and thugs who threatened his live ought to face justice. It is the actions of these types of predators that give both the Afghan government and the allied war effort a bad name.

I think and i am sure that what is done by Fahim Kohdamani and Najib Kabuli is compeltly wrong and they should not do such immoral actions....and force people to do interview by force.....

Sick? Lesson? You must be part of the gang of thieves that help spread this sort of thug life throughout the city .. Read your history books, learn some respect and better yet learn how to write and speak to your elders. Journalist should be protected by all means since they spread the news to the "PEOPLE" ..

Dear All,

Let's not forget the fact that there is still prevailing warlordism in our poor country beside power thirstiness. I would not refute nor overlook what Miskinyar says and I hope that all those who try to stir up ethnically related issues in the country will be brought to justice for their wrongdoings and their wrong corrupted and degraded thoughts. Amin.

GOOD NEWS!
I am not surprise if either side is not so truthful. We know who Mmd Zaii’s are (Kissers of Brits, and kickers of Shah Amanullah Ghazi- our BEST LEADER EVER), and we know who current “leaders” of the country are; and what they did, or continue to do with our people and country.
But I am surprise that now (after three decades of unquestioned killing of innocent people), someone is getting kidnapped, and forced to say something, and they did not (God forbidden) killed him, or did not disappeared; or at least got injured. Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t want anyone on earth to get hurt, especially our poor people who suffered plenty from war, nor our media in charges. God knows how many mass graves are there.
But I wish our people STOP killing (for God sake); by any name and any reason, unless a fair court approves it (which does not exist), and start TALKING. Even though talking gets rough. If this is a turning point in our history, needs recognition; and deserve congratulation to our civilization.
My dears, I see intelligent men are posting comments here; PLEASE stop fuelling another ground for racial war. We must accept realities, and realize that we can’t change the past; and do the best to keep thing calm; and bring to an end destroying bonds among our thin layer of virtual stability in hope of making it strong.
God bless human kind, and humanity.
God bless Afghanistan and Afghan people.
PEACE
