Bio

Dean Areen is a leading scholar in the fields of family law and bioethics. Her recent publications include Family Law (4th ed., 1999) and Law, Science and Medicine (co-authored, 1996 2nd ed.). During 1988-89, Dean Areen was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where she researched the seventeenth-century origins of the relationship between family and law. Dean Areen has also had a distinguished career in public service. Prior to coming to Georgetown in 1972, she served in the Budget Bureau of the City of New York. Between 1977-80 she served as special counsel to the White House Task Force on Regulatory Reform and as General Counsel and Domestic Reorganization Coordinator of the President's Reorganization Project in the Office of Management and Budget. Dean Areen is a Senior Research Fellow of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and a member of the American Law Institute. She has served on the Board of Governors of the D.C. Bar Association, on the Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Defense on Women in the Services, and on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools.
